IMPROVED -WHIP-SOGKET.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
, Be it known that I, CHARLES GHRISTInN, of Sheboygan, int-he county of Sheboygan, and State of Wisconsin, I

Figures 2 and 3 represent modified constructions of the same. v I i My invention consists in applying a spring-clamp, in connection with a socket, to .retain loosely the buttend of the whip-stock,'to the dash-board or other convenient part of a carriage, as a whip-holder; and its advantnges consist in its convenience, cheapness, and the sure holding of the whip.
That others may understand its construction and operation, I will particularly describe it.
A is the dash-board of an ordinary pleasure-carriage,though, if desired, the whip-holder may be attached Bis a socket, made of metal, or some other suitable material, into which the butt-end of the whip O is introduced, when about to be secured in the holder. A few inches above the socket B, the springs D areplaced, and the whip, when it is to be held, is forced between said springs, which separate to permit the whip-stock to pass, and close again in front of it to retain it, as shownrin the figures.
The springs D may be made of brass or steel, and, if desired, they may be covered with leather, or othersuitable material, and the socket B, with the springs D, may be attached to a plate, E, or they may be sepa ratelyrattached to that portion of the carriage deemed to be most convenient.
In figs. 2 and 3 are represented modified methods of construction of the'spring. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, is M A whip-holder, constructed with the socket B, in connection with the springs D, substantially as and for In testimony whereof, I have subscribed inyname, this 13th day of May, 1868. i A CHAS.
