Description
@uitrit glatte gutem @ffice Letters .Patent No. 80,260, dated July 21, 1868.
.IMPROVED PAVEMENT.
ilge tlgtiule interna tu in that fetttrs ateut tnt mating part ai the samt.
ro ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CJVILIQIAMS, of the city, county, and State of `New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pavexnents; and Ido, hereby declare that the. following 4is `a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a portion` of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a pavement constructed accordingto my invention. Figure 2 is a vertical transverse'section of' the same, taken in the line zza: of g. 1. Figure ES is :rn edge view and partial section oi' the same, taken at rightangles to hg; 2
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu all tho figures. V Y This` invention relates to that variety of pavement, formedi'or the most part of- `wooden blocks placed ouend,and the invention'consists in the construction ofthe pavement of sections formed of wooden blocks, securely locked together', whereby the pavement may'be laid down and taken up with much greater readiness than when the blocks are continuously joined together, without in the least detracting from the stability ofthe pavement. The invention further consists in the construction of the paving-blocks with vertical holes, filled with e. hard cement of any suitable kind, whereby a very secure foot-hold is afforded to horses or other'draughbanimals travelling thereon. i v The invention further consists in locking-keys, made rectangular in their cross-section, and so combined lwith the paving-blocks that the latter are not only'in a measure supported against downward pressure,l but may also be much more easily detached or separated from each other, when, for any reason, it is desired to .take upartthe sections just mentioned, than would he possible if the aforesaid keys were made of dove-tail form. l v The invention further consistsin a novel construction of the sub-sills or substructure, which supports'the blocks or'sections, whereby theI substructure may be conveniently laid down'and taken up, without necessitating the removal oi'adjacentportions of the pavement, and whereby a. material reduction in the quantity of lumber required for such substructure is secured.
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it, with referencento the drawings. l y The pavement is'formed of sections,'one of '.vhich is shown each of the figures, und which urelformed of wooden paving-blocks, A,.which are placed `on end, and which are` preferably made of rectangular form. The 4sides. or edges of each of these blocks are furnished with n'arrow rebates, d, at the lower part of each one of which is a rectangular' groove, b. Formed in the-uppersiile of each of the blocks Afand arranged with referenceV to euch other, ie; any suitable or desired manner, aren. 'number of deep hol'es c,'livhich are filled with auyiq'ipro# priate hard cement, indicated at a*, the said cement being, however, mide, by preference, of coal-tar and sand or gravel, or of some iikc material, wvhich ivill'exert a more r less peservative action upon the wood. The coment in the holes e is designed to wear a'wny somewhat faster from the. effects of'travel uponV the Vpavement than the surface of the blocks A, -so that recesses or depressions are formed in" the .surface ofthe pavement, which insure a good foothold for the draught or other animals traversing the same; 'i
'lhc aforesaid blocks being placed side by side, as represented more fully' iri'fig. 41, dat wooden keys, shown at B, in iig. 2, and made rectangular ih their cross-section, are driven into the adjacent grooves b, the two oppo site edges of cachkey fitting into the tivolopposite grooves of adjacent sides of the blocks, inthe manner represented in thciig. 2, just mentioned, so that the edges or sides of the blocks being by these lmeans locked together, each oi' the blocks is innl measure supported by the others against the downward pressure of the animals or vehicles passing over the same, at the same time that, when it. is desired to separato the blocks, as, for'instancc, iri repairing the pavement, the said blocks may be forced laterally from cach other, thus, in many i cases, obvinring the necessity of taking up an entire isectiorx" in making such repairs, and, furthermore, by closing the joints between the lower portions of adjacent blocks, renders tho pavement.- or rather-.the sections l composing the same, practically water-tight.' i
.planks o'r sills C are required only underneath the joints between the bloeksor sections,
i somo 2 Tue grooves or'ohannels formed between the blocks by the comin'gtogether of the'rebutes a thereof, are llcd, as shown otd, with a cement, the same or similarto tbatwith which the holes c arc filled, as herelnbefore fully set forth, the said cement-filled grooves being supplemental, as it were, to the aforesaid holes c, inpro viding a-'foo't-hold-for the draught or other animals traversingthe pavement.
A suicient number of the blo'clrs A are thus put together to form a rectan motion, of any desired'or convenient. size, the said sections being, in the`.construetion of, tho pavement, laid down with their edges snugly in contact, inl suoha way that each section-may be taken up separately without disturbing theA others, while the greater surface of "the sections, as compared with that of the separate blocks, renders the pavement much more iirm and 'stable than would be tle case if the bloeks were laid down separately.
I'n order that the-aforesaid sections shll be more eii'eetunlly supported in' proper positionwith regard to each other, la series of sub-lills, or,'in ot her words,1al substructure, composedof planksLC; of any suitable widthand thidkness; is laid underneath. the same, the joints between the ends of oooh series 'of planks or sills bre'alking joints withthejcontiguous one, such planks or sills being arranged' i'n' n position parallel with 'each other, as shown in dotted outline in iig..1', and under the joints, between the blocks 'of the several sections, as Aalso indicated in figs. and-`3;- but,'if preferred, the 'saidsills or planks maybe placed only underneath the psralieljointsbetween the sections,A the sills, when thus employed, securing the same'rosult as whenused; in the'manner first herein described,-bnt. possibly in a somewhat inferior degree. 'liurthemorm inasmuch as the as, the ease maybe, notion than' would be the case'if the subgulnr or other properly-shaped it follows .that much less timber lor material isfrequired i'n their oonstr st--ffure formed a continuous ilooring underneath the'l aforesaid blocks or sections What -I claim as my invention, and desire toseeure'byLetters Patent, is i The arrangement and formation of spa/:ies d, between and 'around the blocks A,.by meansfof grooves b am keys, B, in combination with the rabbeted sides' a of'said blockssubstantially as sot forth o v C.
