.TO AL WHOM 1T- MAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. UsrIcK, of La Crosse, iu the county of La Crosse, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new' and improved Apparatus for vllllitring and Cutting Printers Rules and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of referencemarked thereon. l
vThe nature of my' invention mainly consists in au'apparatusfor cutting printers rules to form mitre-ys, 81.12.,. by means of files or equivalent cutters, arranged and operating as hereinafter describedi .In the accompanying drawings, which maken. part ot' this specification-- l Y Figure 1 is an isometrical viewof the apparatus. i
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal'section of the same. v yFigure 3 is an isometrical view of the'I-nitring-,tool B. Figure 4 is a like view of the squaring-tool C. 1 Figure v5 is an isometrical: view of the gauge D. v.Figure 6 isa like view of the clamp F. Like letters in all the iigures indicate the same parts. V 4 V A is a box -for holding the rules-to. be cut, and the tools-for mitring and squaringthe same. It has ya.. vertical longitudinal groove, a, for holding the rule atl to be mitred or squared, and a cross-groove, a, at right angles thereto, iu which the -mitring-to'ol B- is moved backward and forward to form. the mitres, or th'e toolC' for squaring endsvof rules. The former tool isshon'p in detail in iig. 3, and the latter in iig.V 6. The cutter bof the mitringftoolB has bevelled edges 1 1, at 'right angles to Veach other, and atequul angles to a vertical line- K "drawn through the junctionvoi' the tivo edges. -Thesegedges have file-teeth throughout their whole length, as i represented iniig. 3. The cutter b is confined, by means of screws c c, in the rebate al ofthe ,stock b. The
Y cutter e of the squaring-toolC is similarlycoustructed and arranged, except as to the form of the cutting` edge. It has a'iile-edge,f, which is at an acute angle with the sides of the stock e and of the cutter, so as to give facility to the operation of the latter in cutting o or squaringwhe ends of rules. The box A, I usually: construct of cast iron. If desired, the portion of the box from 3 to 4 inay he left o ii at'theleft hand of the cross-groove a.
D is a-gauge at the bottoni of the groove a, for determining the'lengths of the rules. .It isadjustable byr means of the set-screwaE -in the clamp F, which slides freely in the longitudinal grooves gg, as seen in figs, l 2. AGr is a scale for facilitating theadjustment of the said gauge D, there 4being vertical lines 4from the lfigures to the bottom of the groove a, to which the front edge of the gauge is respectively set. F is a clamp for securing the front end of the rule against the bottom of the groove a while it is cut or mitreda` The said clamp is held clown by means of the spring H, beneathfthc crosspicce 1, 'and it is raised at pleasure by`mieans of the knob J on the vertical rod h, when a rule is to be withdrawn or one put in place. The gauge D and clamp F are s-hoivn respectively in gs. 5 and 6.
TheA operation is a'.follo\\'s: In the miti-ing process, a rule is confined in the position shown in figs. 1 and 2, u the manner hereinbefore described, with its rear end aga-inst the gauge D, and the mitring-tool B is pushed backward and forward in the cross-groove a2 until the cutter b has cut through the`rule, forming a mitre. When the point of the cutter has descended a little below the bottom side ofthe rule, so that the'wire-edges of the' lower'corners are removed or smoothed oil' by the action of the file-teeth, the lower edge of the stock b is arrestedy by the bottom of the groove a, or the guide strip a3, which serves for a ready adjustment'by'plaoing a strip of paper-beneath it, or the removal of the same, the said strip being conued, by means of screws, to the bottom of the groove. Cutting o and squaring rules is performed in like manner, by means of the tool C.
The `tools B and C lmay be operated by means of acrank andpitman, or otherdevice, if desired.`
Instead bf the file-teeth to the cutters, there may be a succession of bits confined' to the.cutter-stocks, in
any convenient manner,-or attached to the peripheryof a wheel.
lIn the place of the spring H, a lever, cam, 'or wedge may be substituted, or a vert-ical` screw may beused for forcing the clamp on the rule and elevating it therefrom. 5
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the le-formed cutter b Withthe stock B, when arranged to operate substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The improved apparat-us herein described, when its severalv parts are constructed and arranged with relation to each other, in the manner and 'for the purpose Iset forth.
l 3. The combination of the file-formed cutter e with the stock B, when constructed as and for the purpose specified.
` In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and ailixed my seal,"this 4th day of December, 1867.
