Be it known that I, LIONEL A. RANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rice Lake, in the county of Barron and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cultivators; and it has for its object to improve and simplify the construction and operation of this class of devices.
The present invention consists more particularly in certain improvements in the bladecarrying standards and related parts, said standards being supported for rotation in devices which are flexibly connected with the beams, means being also provided whereby the said standards may be tilted and retained in various inclined positions with relation to the beams.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the eliiciency of the same.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cultivator-gang constructed and equipped in accordance with the principles Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the upper end of one-of the standards, the bearing-sleeve for the same and related parts separated or detached from each other.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
The invention is applicable to that class of cultivators in which two suitably-connected gangs are employed; but inasmuch as the construction of the gangs is identical only the right-hand gang has been shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the construction of said gang is included an approximately ll-shaped frame F, which has been shown as being constructed of a members 12.
single piece of bar-iron or other suitable ma terial bent to form the forwardly-converging inner and outer side members 1 and 2, the same being connected and spaced together near their rear ends by means of a cross-brace 3, having bent ends 4 4 for the reception of the rivets, bolts, or other connecting members 5. The rear ends of the side members 1 2 and of the end members 4 4 of the brace are shouldered or offset, as shown at 6, thereby forming spaced lugs 7.
The standards 8 are provided some distance from their upper ends with annular flanges or collars 9, serving to support sleeves 10, which latter are bent from suitably-shaped pieces of metal, the ends of which are placed in contact with each other and extended to form arms 11, which are placed between the spaced lugs 7 and mounted pivotally between said lugs upon transverse bolts or pivotal The upper ends of the standards are provided with non-circular portions 13 and with threaded portions 14. Upon said non-circular portions are seated the adj ustinglevers 15, which are retained in position by means of nuts 16, engaging the threaded upper extremities of the standards. The sleeves 10 are provided at their upper edges with toothed segments 17, adapted to be engaged by locking members or catches 18, suitably connected with the adjustinglevers for the purpose of retaining the latter and the standards operated thereby in adjusted position.
Each of the standards is provided near its lower end with a pair of annular flanges or collars 19, between which is seated a sleeve 20, bent with contacting or overlapping portions to form an arm 21. Said arms are connected, by means of links 22, with the lower ends of ad justing-levers 23, which are fulcrnmed upon the side members 1 2 of the frame and which are equipped with catches or locking devices 24L engaging notched segments 23 upon said side members. The links 22 are preferably provided with auxiliary perforations 26 for the passage of the pivotal members 27, whereby they are connected with the adjusting-levers in order that the range of adjustment may be increased, if desired. The rear ends of the links 22 may be connected with the arms 21 by means of break-pins 28 to prevent injury to the machine in case of unyielding obstructions being encountered by the blades 29, carried at the lower ends of the standards. It is desired to be understood,
however, that any well-known form of spring connection or other yieldingconnection maybe used within the scope of the invention in place of the break-pins here illustrated.
It Will be seen from the foregoing description that the standards 8 are supported for rotation in the sleeves l0 and 20 and that by the adjusting-levers 15 and related parts they may be oscillated in said bearings so that the blades carried at the lower ends of said standards may be presented at various angles to the line of progress. It is evident that plows or cultivator-blades of any desired kind or pattern may be mounted upon the standards and that the connection between said standards and blades may be effected in any desired manner. By means of the levers 23 the stand ards may be tilted to various angles with relation to the frame-beams, the sleeves 10 be ing pivotally connected with the frame in order to admit of such movement. By these adjustments the device may readily be adapted to the character of the work that is to be performed and to perform such work successfully under the varying conditions that may be encountered.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. Acultivator-ganghavingforwardly-converging side beams, a spacing-bar having rearwardly-extended ends connected with the side beams and cooperating with the latter to form spaced lugs, sleeves having projecting arms pivotally supported between said lugs and provided with toothed segment-flanges, standards supported for rotation in said sleeves, and adjusting-levers connected with said standards and having locking members engaging the toothed flanges of the sleeves.
2. A cultivator-gang having side members, sleeves supported pivotally at the rear ends of said side members and provided with toothed flanges, standards supported for rotation in said sleeves, adjusting-levers connected with said standards, and locking devices connected With said levers for engagement with the toothed flanges of the sleeves.
3. In a cultivator, a standard-supporting sleeve provided with a toothed segmental flange, a standard supported for rotation in said sleeve, an adjusting-lever connected with said standard, and locking means connected with said lever for engagement with the toothed flange of the sleeve.
4. In a cultivator, a frame, a standard-supporting sleeve pivotally connected with said frame, a standard supported for rotation in said sleeve, a sleeve connected with said standard at a distance from the supporting-sleeve, an adjusting-lever, a link connecting said lever with the sleeve mounted upon the standard at a distance from the supporting-sleeve, and means for securing the lever at various adjustments.
5. In a cultivator, a frame, a standard supported for rotation by means pivotally connected with said frame, means for adjusting and securing said standard with relation to said supporting means, an adjusting-sleeve supported for rotation upon the standard, an adjusting-lever fulcrumed upon the frame, and a link connecting said lever with the adjusting-sleeve by means including a device adapted to yield to obstructions encountered by the standard.
