Beit knownl that I, lJOHN PHILLIPS, Jr.,'oi` Georgetown, in the county of Pettis, and State of Missouri,

have invented a 'new and improvedyClothes-Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following isl a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, which will enable those sklledrin the art to make and use the same,

This invention relates to a new and improved clothes-Washing machine, of that class in which are'ciproeating rubber is employed for subjecting the clothesto the necessarypressure and rubbing action. l

The accompanying drawing represents a side sectional view of my invention. Y

A-represents the suds-box, of quadrilateral form, and of`any suitable dimensions, and having 'a wheelrB,

vat one side of it, whichhas a zigzag groove, a, made in its inner surface.

C is an arm, secured by a pivot, b, at 'one end tothe inner surface of one side of the shuds-boxl, andlthis arm,

near its opposite and'disengaged end, is, provided with a.` pin, c, which extends into the zigzag groove a of.- th"eV wheel B. A A

The disengaged end of the arm C has a rubber, D, attached to it,which rubber vconsists of a board lextending across the whole width of the suds-bbx, and'is iluted or corrugated horizontally, as shown at d. r

E represents a sliding table, which is fitted and 'works on' the 7'inclined bars or ways e-e, attached to the inner surfaces of the sides of the s'uds-box.

The front end of this table has a iuted` or corrugated :surface-Land said tahle'may be drawn backward or' Vshoved forward by hand with the greatest facility,

The suds-box is supplied with a. requisitev quantity of suds, and the clothes are subjected to thernecessary pressure and rubbing between the utedorcorrugatedsurfacesfd of the table and rubber, the rubber D having an noeud-down or reciprocating movement given it by means ofthe zigzaggroove a in the wheel B, the

pressure on the clothes Vbeing graduated as desreldlby holding back or pressing forward the table E. The clothes pass down between the vcorrugated surfacesinto the lower part of the sudsbox. i

The machine,`as above described, maybe modified vby dispensngiwith the inclined bai-sor waysee, and having the bottom of the suds-box inclined, theI table being providedwith wheels, so that itmay work or move freely on the inclined bottom. v v 4 V l* In this modification the rubber D is not placed so near the end of the suds-box as represented in the draw ving, a. spacebeing allowed between.`the rubber and the end'of the'box, to receive the clothes as they pass down from between the corrugated surfaces. 4 g

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-f The,zigzag groove-a in the wheel vB, and the pin c of the arm C, to whichfthe rubber is attached, lfitting in said groove, in combination with the sliding table E, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose setforth. l
