Thislinventiouvrelates toan apparatus for insuring the safety of steamboilers from explosion, ou4 account of a deliciency of water therein and it consists in arrangin'g'a .valve and seat on the crowp-sheet oi",the lirebox' and in 'the steam-space of the boiler., and operating them by a weight, in.such a manner that when the 'water in the boiler falls to a dangerous point,- the valves willfbe opened, oneof which will discharge steam into the hre-box and the other will dscharge'steam into the atmosphere, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of a steam-boiler with my safety-apparatus attached, the section beingj through the line y y of fig. 2. i

I is a crank, whi'ch is attachedv to a valve-shaft,.to which are 'connected (by arms)l two valves, J and k, i formed by two arcs of circles. 4

The seatz' of the valve .I is supported by the crown-sheet of the hre-box, with an aperture, i', for discharging steam downward into the fire-box. The other valve-seat is supported bythe dome, and is in connection with a steam-pipe, L, through which steam maybe discharged upward through the dome and iutothe atmosphere, .as seen inthe drawing. v Y Y lm, indicates the ordinary water-level in the boiler, which may be considered the point of absolute -safety, as the crown-sheet .n is covered thereby. e y

In this condition the weight h is submerged or under the surface of the water,.where it wi l1' remain while there is a safe supply of water in the boiler, and 4where about one-third of its weight is buoyed up by the water'. When the water in the boiler falls below the vv'eighat .acts upon the valves (through the crank I) with increased power and with its fullweight, as it is no longer buoyed up by the water.

This additional power is sufficient to move the valve'and open the ports which communicate with the rebox, thus discharging steam and extinguishing the fire. iAt thesame time, steam isbloujnl oif through the pipe L, and through a whistle, if desired.

By this arrangement, all danger from explosion, in consequence of low water in the boiler, is avoided. The valve lc may be employed or not, as may be deemed advisable.

I do not claim the use of a oat or of n weight in a steam-boiler,- for indicating the-height ofwater, as I i am aware that it is not new; but i What I claim as now, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
