A li ati n fil d December 31, 1904. Serial No. 289,183. I
To all wiumt it n'my concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID MnLvLN liAnnY, citizen of the United States, residing at Sykesville, in the county of Jefferson, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Tools; and i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination-tools; and it has for its object to provide in one tool both a hammer and a plane wherein either may be used and in which a portion of the handle of the hatchet may be removed, so as not to interfere with the operation of the plane, while the remaining portion of the bandle will serve as a handle for the plane.
Other objects and advantages of the invention have reference to details of structure and will be understood from the following description.
in the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a combination-tool embodying the present in vention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken longitudinally through the hatchet-head and a portion of the handle, the remaining part of the'handle being broken away. a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a hatchet-head 5, having a blade 6 at one end and a nail-driving por tion 7 in the opposite end, the head having also a socket-piece 8 projecting therefrom between the portions 6 and 7, in which is an inwardly-tapered socket 9,, in which is engaged Fig. 3 is the correspondiugly-tapered reduced end pertion 10 of a handle 11. The tapered end portion of the handle is held within the socket by means of a screw 12, which is engaged through the wall of the socket-piece and impinges against said tapered portion of the handle. This construction provides for ready attachment and detachment of the handle for a purpose to be presently explained.
Formed vertically through the head 5 between the portions 8 and 7 is a passage 13, which extends diagonally, and in the side walls of this passage are grooves 15, which receive the edge portions of a plane-blade 16,
the lower or cutting edge of which is adapted to project from the upper end of the passage. The blade is held at different points 0 ts adjustment in the grooves by means of a setscrew 16', which is engaged through the side of the head 5 and impinges inst the edge o'r' the blade.
It will be noted that the set-screw 16' is engaged through a depending portion 17 of the hatchet-head, the end of which next to the portion T of the head is rounded.
Nhen the tool is to be used as hatchet, it is manipulated in the usual manner; but when it is to be used as a plane the handle 11 is removed and the tool is then held with the cutting edge of the plane-blade downwardly, the hand of the operator resting with the base of the thumb against the rounded end of the portion 17 and the fingers of the' other hand grasping the sockct-piece ti.
It will be seen from the above description that there is provided in a single article a tool that may be used for all the purposes of a hatchet and a plane, while the parts are so arranged that the socket-piece forms a part of the handle in one case and the criti re handle in the other case. v
\Vhat is claimed is- A combination-tool consisting of a head provided with a socket-piece projecting therefrom, the head at one side of the socket-piece being tapered to a cutting edge and at the opposite side of the socket-piece being broadened and having a portion projecting therefrom in the same direction as the socket-piece, said projecting portion having its outer end terminating short of the outer end of said broadened portion and rounded, the projecting portion and the adjacent part of the head having a diagonal passage formed therethrough and slots in the side walls of the passage, a blade slidably engaged in the slots and projecting from the passage, means for holding said blade against sliding movement, a handle removably engaged in the socketpiece and means for holding the handle in the socket-piece, said socket-piece projecting beyond said pro ecting portion of the head.
Intestirnony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVll) MELVIN HANEY.
