Description

Prion.
IMPROVEMENT IN vATTACHllI'ENTS FOR BALANCING POLISHMiG-WHEELS Specification forming part of Letters Patient No. "'d, dated-July 14, 1868.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Re it known that I, HORACE K. J oNEs, of Kensington, in vthe county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Balancing Polishing-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, which Will enable others skilled in the art to -make and use 'my said invention, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Whiche- Figure l is an elevation of -this invention, showing the position of the Weight-s a a when# ever the Wheel is perfectly balanced Without the aid'of the attachment- Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the `sanie, tl1e line b b indieating-the plane of section. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the Weight a. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the Weight a on the line e c.V

This invention consists in the use, gfor the purpose of balancing polishing-Wheels and Aother Wheels required to run at a higlivelocity, of tWo or more Weights iitted so as to be easily moved in a groove or track fixed upon the side of the `Wheel and concentric with it. These Weights are each capable of being fastened at any desired point in their track by a set-screw.
A represents a ring of cast-iron,1n one side of the, mandrel.
of 'which is a T-shaped groove. -Thi's ring is separated at d d for convenience of introducing the Weights a a, and vis pierced with holes for the reception of Wood-screws, by which it is to be fastened to thewvheell d represents a'We'ight made of cast-iron or other suitable material and fitted so as to slide freely in the groove in the ring A. This Weight is tted in the center with the setscrew h, by which it may be fastened at any point in the groove of the ring Ar.
i Operation: The ring A, containing the Weights a a, having been fastened in a concentric groove in the side of a polishing-Wheel, the Wheel is put upon a mandrel, which is placed upon parallel horizontal Ways.v The Wheel Willl then make a partial revolution,
until its heaviest part settles under the axis One or both of the Weights are then'moved and fastened in such aposition th at they will exactly counterbalance the heavy part when the wheel is ready for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'The combination of theV ring A and Weights a, constructed and arranged, as herein described, With a polishing-Wheel, for the purpose of balancing it, substantially as specified.
