Specification of Letters Patent.

To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. l\/lOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greatbend, county of Barton, and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Spoons, Forks, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in attachments for spoons, forks, and the like, and has for its object to provide an attachmen twhich may be easily and quickly attached to the shank of a spoon or fork, and said attachment coming in contact with the edge of a dish or cup in which the spoon or fork is inserted will keep the spoon or fork from slipping into the contents of said dish or cup.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spoon having my attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2, a cross-section through the shank of aspoon, showing my attachment applied thereto; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the attachment.
This attachment is constructed of one piece of wire, so bent as to form a spring-clip A, adapted to be sprung upon the shank of a spoon or fork. One end of the wire (represented at B) is so bent as to spring in beyond the inner walls of the clip portion A and bears directly against the rear of the shank of the spoon, as shown in Fig. 2, and therefore aids in holding the attachment securely tothe shank. The other end of the wire extends outward from the clip portion, so that it will stand at right angles to the shank of the spoon, and is bent back upon itself to form the loop O. This loop or extension O is the portion which is adapted to come in contact with the edge of the utensil, .dish, or cup in which the spoon or fork is inserted.
Thearticle is constructed as follows: The end B is provided with a comparatively sharp bend, and the wire then passes around to form the front portion of the clip A, and then the wire is bent back upon itself, so that the front portion of the clip A is composed of two strands, and the wire then passes back to the rear portion and is doubled back upon itself a part of the distance, then is bent at right angles and back upon itself to form the loop O. Thus a spring-clip is formed open upon one side with the end B normally extending into the clip beyond the inner wall, so that when the clip is slipped upon the shank of the spoon or fork it will be held in any position placed by the friction generated by the spring action of the attachment.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thusfully described my invention,
what I claim as new and useful is As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for spoons, forks or the like consisting of one piece of wire bent so as to form a springclip adapted to be slipped upon the shank of the spoon or fork from the side, said wire so bent that each prong of the clip will be composed of two strands, one end of the wire bent so as to normally protrude into the clip between and beyond the inner walls of the same to form a spring for holding the attachment upon the shank, the other end of the wire extending outward from the clip portion, then back upon itself to form a loop adapted to stand at right angles to the shank of the spoon or fork, and extend rearwardly therefrom, as and for the purpose specified.
