Specification of Letters Eat-ens;
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed Mai-c119. 1905. Serial No. 249,227.
To (LN Halo/2t it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysvillc, in the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fastening- Bolt and Door-Check; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sliding bolts, and more particularly to one adapted for use as a door-check.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied to a door and by means of which a door may be held in its closed position or in an open or partially-open position.
\Yith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a partially-open door, showing my improved fastening-bolt or check applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the parts shown in Fig. l, the door being in its closed position and the sliding bolt being swung to a horizontal position and engaged with its keeper. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view through the device, and Fig. #1 is a detail view of the end of the sliding bolt.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a portion of the door-frame, 2 denotes a swinging door hinged, as at 3, and :1: denotes my improved combined sliding-bolt fastener and door-check. The latter comprises a casing 5, a sliding bolt 6, mounted therein, and a keeper 7 for sai bolt. The casing 5 consists of a base-plate 8 and a tubular guide 9 to receive the sliding bolt, and the bolt 6, which is cylindrical in form, has at one of its ends a projecting knob or fingerpiece 10 and at its other end serrations or teeth 11. The casing 4 is adapted to be pivotally mounted at a suitable point upon the lower portion of one side of a door, so that it may be swung to either the vertical or the horizontal position shown in the drawings. 'hen in the vertical position, (shown in Fig. 1,) the teeth or serrations 11 are adapted to be engaged with the floor, so as to hold or check the door in an open or partially-open position, and when swung to the horizontal position (shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings) said bolt is adapted to be engaged with its keeper 7, which is secured upon the doort'rame 1 and is of the usual form. The mounting of the casing L upon the door2 is preferably etfected by forming in the center of its base-plate 5 an opening 12, which is adapted to receive a pivot bolt or screw 13, which latter also serves to secure the casing to the door. In order to limit the swinging movement of the casing, I preferably provide at suitable points upon the door stops 14; and 15, which are adapted to be engaged by the side edge of the casing, as shown. In order to retain the sliding bolt within the guide 9 of the casing i and also to bolt or look the bolt against sliding movement in said guide, I provide said bolt with a longitudinally-extending flattened portion 16, which is adapted to be engaged by a set-screw 17, which has its threaded portion engaged with a threaded opening 18, formed in the guide 9. It will be seen that by means of said set-screw the bolt may be clamped in any desired position, and it will be prevented from being drawn entirely out of the casing owing to the .engagement of the set-screw with a portion 19 at the end of the bolt which is not flattened.
Instead of using the set-screw any other suitable form of locking device may be provided, or a spring may be used for projecting the bolt.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'Ihecombination with a doororothermovable element, of a casing pivotally mounted thereon, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, and means for holding said sliding bolt against movement in said casing.
2. Thecombinationwithadoororothcrmovable element, of a casing pivotally mounted thereon, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, and a set-screw for holding said sliding bolt against movement in said casing.
3. The combination with a door-frame and its swinging door, of a casing pivotallymounted upon said door, a sliding bolt in said easing, a keeper upon said door-frame adapted to be engaged by said bolt and stops upon said door to limit the swinging movement of said IO easing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
ALEXANDER M. JOHNSON.
