Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom I? may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Hose-Coupling, of
with which it may come in contact or which r may accidentally pass therethrough and which will not be accidentally released by any rough usage to which it may be subjected.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists incertain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corre sponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form for the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of theparts may be resorted to without .departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the right is therefore reserved 'of making all the changes and modifications which fairly fall within the scope of the invention and the claim made therefor.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the sleeve detached. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail illustrating the construction and operation of thev shoulder 15 is formed thereon, andthe other.
section, as 10, is provided with a plurality of spaced outwardly-extending lugs 16, inclined longitudinally.
Surrounding the contiguous portions of the sections 10 11 is a sleeve 17, having at one end an inwardly-extending tlange 18 for engaging the shoulder 15 and provided at the other end with a plurality of inwardly-extending spaced lugs 19, inclined longitudinally and corresponding to the lugs 16 on the section 11 and adapted to be engaged thereby when the sleeve is rotated. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the section 11 is inserted into the sleeve 17, with the lugs 16' opposite the spaces between the lugs 19, the two sections may be closelyengaged with the ends 14 in conf tact, and then by rotating the slee ve the inclined surfaces of the lugs 19 will run over the inclined surfaces of the lugs 16 and tightly compress the parts together, and thus secure a very closely fitting joint, as the engaging portions 14 will .preferably be ground toa watertight fit.
It will be observed vthat the coupling can be effected instantly by simply rotating the sleeve the fraction of a revolution.
. As many of the spaced lugs may be employed as required; but four will generally be used, asshown, and when this number is employed the sleeve need be rotated less than one-eighth of a revolution to complete the coupling action, and in uncoupling the reverse movement'of the sleeve to the same degree will release it.
It will also be noted that all the parts are metal and no rubber, fiber, or other fragile'or easily destructible gaskets or packings are employed to become Worn or deteriorated by use or exposure to the action of the water or other liquids passing through the hose.
The all-metal coupling will also be found lof, great advantage for use in hot-Water hose or hose for conducting acids or like liquids which are destructive to ordinary rubber or similar gaskets or packings.`
The sleeve 17 is provided with spaced radial ribs 2() to receive a Spanner-wrench to forcibly'rotate the same.
Formed longitudinally in the outer face of the section 10 is a channel or recess .for movably receiving a bolt 21, the bolt projecting into the path of the lugs 19 and with the operating side inclined, as shown. The bolt is yieldably supported by a spring 22 to hold it normally in operative position and will also be provided with'a thumb-lug 23 to assist in the operation. The bolt will be so located relative to the lugs 19 that when the parts are united and the sleeve rotated to cause the lugs 19 to engage the lugs 16 the bolt will be thrown by its spring into the rear of the nearest lug 19, and thus eiectually lock the parts and prevent accidental displacement. The inclined face of the bolt provides for following up of the lugs as they become worn by repeated use` and thus insures the constant automatic tightening of the locking means and prevents any tendency to looseness or rattling.
When the coupling is to be attached directly to a hydrant or fire-plug, an enlarging union or auxiliary coupling, as at 24, will be employed, and to this end the exterior of the member 11 will be threaded to receive the union.
It will be observed that the member 11 rotates freely within the sleeve 17 and upon the end 14 of the member l0, so that twists or kinks will not be formed in the different hosesections. This is a very important advantage and adds materially to the value and efiiciency of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what -is claimed is- A hosecoupling comprising two tubular sections having means at their outer ends for connection to a hose and having their abutting faces inclined reversely to the transverse plane of the same, the inner walls of said sections at the juncture of the latter heilig inclined longitudinally in opposite directions, a laterallyextending shoulder formed oiione of said sections and spaced from its outer end, a plurality of spaced longitudinal lugs extending laterally from the opposite section, said opposite scction having a longitudinal recess formed in its outer wall and extending from one end of said section to a point intermediate two of the peripheral lugs, a sleeve provided with spaced radial ribs iiiclosing` the contiguous portions of said tubular sections and having at one end thereof an internal iiange for engagement with the shoulder on one ot' said sections and provided at its opposite end with a plurality ol spaced in wardly-extending lugs adapted to engage the lugs on the adjacent section when the sleeve is rotated, a bolt seated in the recess in said adjacent section and having a terminal handle and an enlarged head provided with an inclined face adapted to bear against one of the spaced lugs on said sleeve, and means for nominally holding the bolt in the path of movement of the sleeve.
