Description
PATBNTED JULY 25, 1905.
H. J. WESSINGER. ELECTRIC TERMINAL BOND.
APPLICATION rum APR 15 1904 J INVENT R 7w- A rromgzs My 141M714 UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1905.
Application filed April 15, 1904. Serial No. 203,274.
To all whom it may concern.-
invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to electric terminal bonds, and has for its object the provision of a readily-removable bond for electrically connecting railway-rails.
With this and other objects in view it consists, in combination with two railway-rails, of thimbles secured in said rails, tapered plugs inserted in said thimbles, a wire secured at its opposite ends to said plugs at one end thereof, and nuts operating upon said plugs for forcing said plugs into circumferential contact with said thimbles.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of my said invention on the line A B of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my said invention, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sec tion of a modified form of my said invention.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 are railway-rails provided with threaded apertures in their webs, in which are secured taper-bored thimbles 3. Corrcspondingly-tapered plugs 4,
threaded at thei r smaller ends, are inserted into said thimbles and are drawn into close circumferential contact therewith by nuts 5. Formed on or secured at its opposite ends to the larger ends of said plugs is a connecting wire conductor of electricity 6. For the purpose of securing said wire said plugs may be cleft, as at 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and recessed or apertured to receive said wire, the cleft portions of the plugs pinching or gripping said wire as the plugs are drawn into said thimble, or, as shown in Fig. 3, said wire may be permanently united with or integral with said plugs. Said wire may, however, be connected to said plugs in any one or more of numerous ways, and I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the particular methods shown. Said bond may also be used for connecting other terminals than railway-rails, all within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an electric terminal bond, the combination of opposite terminals provided with threaded apertures, externally-threaded taper-bored thimbles inserted in said apertures and engaging the threads thereof, solid correspondinglytapered plugs inserted in said thimbles, means for efiecting circumferential contact of said plugs with the corresponding thimbles, and a conductor of electricity connecting said plugs and integral therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. \VESSINGER.
