PATENT OFFICE.
CARL VON LOM, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
SPEGIFIGATION orming pa of L e Pa en No. 795,143, dated July 18,1905.
Application filed November 1'7, 1904. Serial No. 233,172.
To (tZl whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL VON LoM, residing at Cologne, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fixing Wooden Banisters to Stone Steps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The known devices for fixing wooden banisters to stone steps according to which the banister is either screwed onto a screw let into the step or screwed onto a plate which is connected with the steps by means of a pin or dowel which is let in and stopped up have several disadvantages. The foot of the wooden banister is easily deprived of its covering of varnish, and when the steps are washed a quantity of water collects around it, whereby the screws become rusty, in course of time break, and the banister becomes loose.
The present invention relates to a device for fixing wooden banisters to stone steps, whereby the banister is protected against damp, the consequences resulting therefrom, and likewise retained in its proper position.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 being alongitudinal section through the fixing devices and the ban- I ister inserted therein; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the banister-support; Fig. 3, a section through A B in Fig. 1.
The improved fixing device consists of a hollow cu p-like support or socket a, furnished with a pin, dowel, or the like d, let into the step. The sides of the hollow support taper upward. The support is made flexible by means of slots 1) and is provided on the bottom with arib c, which engages in a groove formed in the banister G. A tapering sleeve c is pushed onto the hollow body a and presses the flexible part of the sides thereof against the banister G, which it thereby secures, the wide base of the sleeve '11 coming closely against the step, thus retaining the banister permanently in its proper position.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is A device for securing wooden banisters to stone steps comprising a hollow cup-like body or socket a provided with a pin or the like let into the step in the usual manner, a rib 0, formed inside on the bottom, which takes into a groove in the foot of the banister, and a tapering sleeve 2", which is pushed over the tapered and slotted sides of the socket and has a broad base which is seated on the step.
Dated this 8th day of November, 1904.
CARL VON LOM.
In presence of- WILLIAM KuEPPERs, J OH. SoHULz.
