SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,905, dated July 18, 1905 Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No 253,494.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL (J. WHITLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Balmville, Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in clothes-pins.

The object of the invention is to provide a clothes-pin shaped from a single piece of wire bent to form a head or handle portion and spring clamping-fingers which are adapted to firmly secure clothes on the line.

A further object is to provide a clothes-pin which will be simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction, efficient in use, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

With these and other objects in view the invention consistsof certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a clothes-pin constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the manner of using the same. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side view showing the same removed from a line.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a pin, which is formed of a single piece of wire bent to form a rectangular head or open handle portion 2, having at its lower end a cross-bar 3, below which are formed spring clamping-fingers A. Said fingers 4 are connected to the crossbar 3 by coils 5 and are bent outwardly and away from each other, as at 6, adjacent to their upperends, and below said outwardly-bent portion the fingers are bent inwardly to form a clamping portion 7, below which the ends of the fingers are bent or flared outwardly, as at 8, to facilitate the engagement of the same with a line.

In forming the pin the head or open handle portion 2 and the clamping-fingers 4 are shaped from asingle piece of wire, as hereinbefore described, the opposite ends of the wire being forced together at one side of the rectangular head or open handle portion 2. If desired, they may be soldered or secured together in any suitable manner, as at a.

A clothes-pin constructed as herein shown and described may be quickly and readily applied to a line to secure the clothes thereon and when so applied will securely hold the clothes in place, the rectangular head or open handle portion 2 forming a convenient handle by which the pin is applied to and removed from the line.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A clothes-pin formed of asingle piece of wire bent to form an open handle portion,a horizontally-disposed cross-bar and opposing spring clamping-fingers which are bent outwardly near their upper ends then inwardly, the lower ends being flared outwardly to facilitate the engagement of the pin with the line, the upper ends of said clamping-fingers being coiled around said cross-bar, substantially as described.
