NTTED STATES Patented July 18, 1905.
HERMAN J BLANKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATER-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,846, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed July 29, 1904. Serial No. 218,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN J. BLANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and-useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water-heaters, and has for its object the rapid heating of the water; and with this object in view the invention consists in a novel arrangement of the coils and burners hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the heater, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the top or cap removed. Fig. 4; is a plan View of the burners.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes the body of the heater, being mounted on a suitable base 6. The body comprises a cylindrical casing or shell 7, of suitable sheet metal, and has on the inside a lining 8, of asbestos, to retain the heat. The top of the casing is closed by a cap 9, having air-holes 10. The base carries a bracket 11, whereby the heater can be conveniently fastened to a wall or other support.
The casing 7 near the top thereof contains an annular header 12, which is fed by a supplypipe 13, which enters the casing through the base. From the header 12 a number of coils 14 extend downwardly close to the burners 15 and back, as at 16, to an annular header 17, which is located closely under the header 12. The diameter of the coils 16 is less than that of the coils 14:, and they are inclosed by the latter. This arrangement economizes space and permits the employment of a large number of coils, five being shown in the drawings. A large heating-surface is also presented to the burners, which results in a rapid heating of the water. The water enters the header 12 through the supply-pipe 13 and circulates down through the outer coils 14 and upwardly to the header 1? through the inner coils 16 and from the header 17 out through the outlet-pipe 18. The outlet-pipe extends downwardly and through the base to the outside.
The burners are located under the coils, one burner being provided for each set. Any ordinary gas or other burner can be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In awater-heater, in combination, a casing having burners at the bottom thereof, headers therein at the top, and a plurality of continuous pipes each of which is connected at its end to the headers respectively, and extends in a spiral coil downwardly from one header toward the burners, and upwardly to the other header, and outlet and inlet pipes to the headers respectively.
2. In a water-heater, in combination, a casing having burners at the bottom thereof, a
pair of headers at the top, a plurality of continuous pipes connected at opposite ends to the headers respectively. each pipe being coiled to form inner and outer spirals which depend from the headers toward the burners, and inlet and outlet pipes connected to the headers respectively.
3. In a water-heater, in combination, a casing having burners at the bottom thereof, a pair of concentrically-arranged annular headers of different diameters at the top, an inletpipe connected to the larger header, a series of pipes each of which extends in continuity downwardly from the larger header toward the burners and back to the smaller header, the pipes being coiled to form inner and outer spirals, and an outletpipe connected to the smaller header.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HERMAN J. BLANKE.
