Definitions

  • This invention relates to improvements in portable windlasses.
  • the objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved portable windlass by which buildings and like heavy objects which it is desired to move considerable distances may be moved with comparative ease and rapidity; second, to provide an improved portable windlass which is comparatively simple in structure and in operation and at the same time is capable of performing very heavy work.
  • Figure 1 is a side elevation view of my improved portable Windlass, portions of the frame being broken away to show the arrangement of the parts.
  • Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
  • Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View showing the manner of securing the cables, taken on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of .Fig. 1.
  • A is the supporting-frame.
  • This frame A is provided with suitable carrying runners or shoes A.
  • the rear portion of the frame is provided with a bottom which serves as a scraper or pickup for the anchor-chain E.
  • This scraper or pick-up is preferably made up of slat-like cross-pieces a a. the forward cross-piece a being shaped to form a scraper-blade. The object of this scraper or pick-up for the anchorchain will fully appear from the detailed description to follow.
  • the cross-pieces a a are spaced apart to allow the dirt picked up thereby to fall through to the ground as the Windlass is moved forward.
  • a transversely-arranged aXle B is supported in suitable bearings carried by the frame A.
  • Centrally arranged on this axle is adriving-wheel B, havinga peripheral groove therein adapted to receive the draft or power cable G.
  • the axle B at each side of the wheel B serves as winding-drums for the tackle rope or cable L.
  • the draft-chain D is connected by the chains D to the forward ends of the longitudinally-arranged rods/t. These rods are secured to the sides of the frame A.
  • the draft-chain D is provided with a clawshaped grappling-hook d at its forward end. This hook is adapted to engage the anchorchain E, the same being shown connected therewith in Fig. 1 and disconnected therefrom in Fig. 2.
  • the anchor-chain E is secured to the anchor-posts, as e, by the crosschain E.
  • the anchor-chain E is connected to the cross-chain E by means of the pulley e at its forward end. This insures an even pull on the cross-chain and a direct pull for the Windlass, avoiding the necessity of carefully locating the anchor-posts.
  • the posts may be located at the sides of the street or roadway 0r secured to trees or the like along the highway or street. paved streets or the like, where it is not expedient to drive the anchor-posts into the central part of the street.
  • the driving or power cable C is adapted to be wound in the peripheral groove of the wheel B.
  • This cable 0 is provided with a centrally-located guide 0 on the cross-piece c of the frame. This guide being located directly in front of the wheel B guides the cable thereon in winding and prevents its being drawn over the edge thereof in operating the device.
  • a tackle consisting of a pair of pulleyblocks F and G is provided.
  • the block F is secured to the rear ends of the rods It by a pair of chains H, which are connected to the This is of particular advantage oneyebolts 7b in the forward end of the pulley.
  • the block G is connected by the chain I to the building or object to be moved, the same being illustrated herein in conventional form.
  • the eyebolt i for securing the chain 1 to the block Gr is centrally arranged thereon.
  • the blocks F and G are of peculiar construction, particularly adapted for use in this relation.
  • These blocks F and G are of considerable width, and the sheaves f and g and g are arranged at the sides thereof, so that the tacklecable L is guided onto the winding-drums at each side of the driving-wheel B.
  • the sheave f of the block F is arranged on the rear end thereof.
  • the tackle-cable L is passed over this sheave, thence over the sheaves g of the block G, thence over the sheaves f of the block F, and back over the sheave g of the block Gr. They are then passed forwardly and secured to the winding-drums of the axle B. With the blocks thus formed the tacklerope L is positively prevented from becoming tangled.
  • the block F is secured by the chains H, so that it always maintains its proper position.
  • the sheaves of the pulleys are arranged so that there is no danger of the tackle becoming twisted, and the strain on the tackle-cable is reduced to a minimum.
  • the blocks F and G are of sufficient width so that the tackle-cable L is, as before stated, delivered to the winding-drums of the shaft B in the proper relation at each side of the wheel B.
  • a guideroller M between the same and opposite the wheel B.
  • This roller M is of such diameter as to guide the tackle-cables L to each side of the wheel.
  • the wheel B is provided with ratchet-teeth Z), and a pivoted pawl Z), adapted to engage these teeth, is provided.
  • 1 secure the driving and the tackle cables in a peculiar manner, which, while very secure, enables their being quickly attached or detached. 1 accomplish this by boring three holes through the wheel for each cable to be secured. The end of the cable to be secured is then passed through these holes and its end inserted under the loop Z thus formed in the cable, so that it is clamped between the loop and the face-of the wheel. This secures the cables, so that while they are securely retained there is no possibility of their becoming undone under tension. At the same time they can be readily released should occasion require without cutting, as is likely to be necessary in case they have been secured by means of knots.
  • the tackle In operation the tackle is connected to the object to be moved, the tackle-cables being unwound from the drums and the driving or power cable wound upon the wheel B.
  • the anchor-chain E is properly secured and the grappling-hook d is engaged therewith.
  • anchor-chain E is of considerable length and is preferably located in the first instance so that the grappling-hook (Z is engaged with the rear end thereof.
  • power is applied to the driving-cable C, preferably horse-power.
  • This drives the winding-drums and through the tackle connection with the building described moves the building forward.
  • the Windlass is moved forward, preferably by hitching to the draft-chain D, until the tackle is extended.
  • This drives the wheel B backwardly, thereby winding up the driving-cable on the wheel B.
  • the book 6 is again engaged with the anchor-chain, and the operation is repeated.
  • the anchor-chain is picked up by the scraper or pick-up therefor on the Windlass.
  • the anchor-chain E is preferably of considerable length, as it requires less frequent resetting of the anchorposts, and consequently there is a large amount of time saved.
  • the Windlass can be reset a number of times without changing the anchorposts, and, as before stated, it is only necessary in resetting the same to transfer the power to hitch from the driving-cable to the draft-chain D. This resetting also winds up the driving-cable.

PATENT OFFICE.
PORTABLE WINDLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,765, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed September 22, 1904. Serial No. 225,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER A. WooDwoR'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo.county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable VVindlasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable windlasses.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved portable windlass by which buildings and like heavy objects which it is desired to move considerable distances may be moved with comparative ease and rapidity; second, to provide an improved portable windlass which is comparatively simple in structure and in operation and at the same time is capable of performing very heavy work.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevation view of my improved portable Windlass, portions of the frame being broken away to show the arrangement of the parts. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View showing the manner of securing the cables, taken on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of .Fig. 1.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A is the supporting-frame. This frame A is provided with suitable carrying runners or shoes A. The rear portion of the frame is provided with a bottom which serves as a scraper or pickup for the anchor-chain E. This scraper or pick-up is preferably made up of slat-like cross-pieces a a. the forward cross-piece a being shaped to form a scraper-blade. The object of this scraper or pick-up for the anchorchain will fully appear from the detailed description to follow.
The cross-pieces a a are spaced apart to allow the dirt picked up thereby to fall through to the ground as the Windlass is moved forward. A transversely-arranged aXle B is supported in suitable bearings carried by the frame A. Centrally arranged on this axle is adriving-wheel B, havinga peripheral groove therein adapted to receive the draft or power cable G. The axle B at each side of the wheel B serves as winding-drums for the tackle rope or cable L. The draft-chain D is connected by the chains D to the forward ends of the longitudinally-arranged rods/t. These rods are secured to the sides of the frame A.-
The draft-chain D is provided with a clawshaped grappling-hook d at its forward end. This hook is adapted to engage the anchorchain E, the same being shown connected therewith in Fig. 1 and disconnected therefrom in Fig. 2. The anchor-chain E is secured to the anchor-posts, as e, by the crosschain E. The anchor-chain E is connected to the cross-chain E by means of the pulley e at its forward end. This insures an even pull on the cross-chain and a direct pull for the Windlass, avoiding the necessity of carefully locating the anchor-posts. By the use of the cross-chain E the posts may be located at the sides of the street or roadway 0r secured to trees or the like along the highway or street. paved streets or the like, where it is not expedient to drive the anchor-posts into the central part of the street.
The driving or power cable C is adapted to be wound in the peripheral groove of the wheel B. This cable 0 is provided with a centrally-located guide 0 on the cross-piece c of the frame. This guide being located directly in front of the wheel B guides the cable thereon in winding and prevents its being drawn over the edge thereof in operating the device.
A tackle consisting of a pair of pulleyblocks F and G is provided. The block F is secured to the rear ends of the rods It by a pair of chains H, which are connected to the This is of particular advantage oneyebolts 7b in the forward end of the pulley. The block G is connected by the chain I to the building or object to be moved, the same being illustrated herein in conventional form. The eyebolt i for securing the chain 1 to the block Gr is centrally arranged thereon. The blocks F and G are of peculiar construction, particularly adapted for use in this relation. These blocks F and G are of considerable width, and the sheaves f and g and g are arranged at the sides thereof, so that the tacklecable L is guided onto the winding-drums at each side of the driving-wheel B. The sheave f of the block F is arranged on the rear end thereof. The tackle-cable L is passed over this sheave, thence over the sheaves g of the block G, thence over the sheaves f of the block F, and back over the sheave g of the block Gr. They are then passed forwardly and secured to the winding-drums of the axle B. With the blocks thus formed the tacklerope L is positively prevented from becoming tangled. The block F is secured by the chains H, so that it always maintains its proper position. The sheaves of the pulleys are arranged so that there is no danger of the tackle becoming twisted, and the strain on the tackle-cable is reduced to a minimum. The blocks F and G are of sufficient width so that the tackle-cable L is, as before stated, delivered to the winding-drums of the shaft B in the proper relation at each side of the wheel B.
To prevent the tackle-cables being drawn across the edges of the wheel B in operation in the event of side draft, I arrange a guideroller M between the same and opposite the wheel B. This roller M is of such diameter as to guide the tackle-cables L to each side of the wheel. The wheel B is provided with ratchet-teeth Z), and a pivoted pawl Z), adapted to engage these teeth, is provided.
1 secure the driving and the tackle cables in a peculiar manner, which, while very secure, enables their being quickly attached or detached.
In operation the tackle is connected to the object to be moved, the tackle-cables being unwound from the drums and the driving or power cable wound upon the wheel B. The anchor-chain E is properly secured and the grappling-hook d is engaged therewith. The
anchor-chain E is of considerable length and is preferably located in the first instance so that the grappling-hook (Z is engaged with the rear end thereof. With the parts thus connected power is applied to the driving-cable C, preferably horse-power. This drives the winding-drums and through the tackle connection with the building described moves the building forward. When the tackle is collapsedthat is, closed up as far as possible the Windlass is moved forward, preferably by hitching to the draft-chain D, until the tackle is extended. This drives the wheel B backwardly, thereby winding up the driving-cable on the wheel B. The book 6 is again engaged with the anchor-chain, and the operation is repeated. As the Windlass is drawn forward the anchor-chain is picked up by the scraper or pick-up therefor on the Windlass. This carries the chain along, so that it does not interfere with the carrying-rollers of the building or object being moved. By thus arranging the parts I am enabled to move very heavy objects very rapidly. The anchor-chain E is preferably of considerable length, as it requires less frequent resetting of the anchorposts, and consequently there is a large amount of time saved. With the comparatively long anchor-chain the Windlass can be reset a number of times without changing the anchorposts, and, as before stated, it is only necessary in resetting the same to transfer the power to hitch from the driving-cable to the draft-chain D. This resetting also winds up the driving-cable.
By connecting the draft-chains D and the tackle-securing chains H to the ends of the .rod in very little strain is placed upon the frame of the Windlass when in operation. The strain upon the axle B is also minimized by the arrangement of parts as I have illustrated and described. The structure may therefore be made of comparatively light material and still be strong and durable. With my im proved Windlass comparatively heavy objects may be rapidly and easily moved. I have illustrated and described the same in detail in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and economy, although I am aware that the same might be varied consid erably in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
