E. TRUSLOW. BAG TIE.
No. 79,414. Patented June sol, 1868.

@uitrit tatss. atsut @ffice Letters Patent No. 79,414, dated J'une 30, 1868.
mrsoysn BAG-Tm,
@he Stintalz'nfzmh tu iu ttes: gttcrs Extent mit making part nf the samt;
TOALL wHoM-I'r MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, EDw AnD TRUsLow, of thecity, county, and State of New Yorlx, have inventada new and improved Tie or Fastening for Shouf-Bands, Bags,Bale-Hoops,' &Ic.; and I do lhereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and4 exact description thereof, which will'enable others skilled inthe-art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a portici' this specification.
My invention is represented by a. plan or top view, showing it as applied to afba'le. l'
The object 'ofthis invention is to construct a nca't,"simplc, and cheap metallic tie or.lock,fcrmed of n single' bentplate, without slots orotherexpensive attachment, by which the ends of bale-ropes, sheet-bands, bag-strings, tcJ-miay be securely `and readily fastened. I
i Myimproved baleftieiis formed from a single square plate ofl metal, A, of the proper sise-,and thickness, Dy bending the four corners of the plate over upon the body'of the plate, towards the centre thereof, as seen at a al (das, the vcorners nearly meeting at the centre of the plate, and the edges of thebentportions of thc'plato being separated hy`-a narrow space, c.
The cornersthus bent over are not pressed down so as to come in contact with the body of the'plate, but a narrow space is left between, in which the hoop, baud, or string is retained, in the manner hereinafter described,- B is the rope or band, the centre or b ight of which is passed under, the corner, d, of the tie. One end:, b, of
the band is then passed around the bale', and, being. knotted-at its extremity, the knot is brought to tha'c'entre of .the plate, slipped under the corners az as, and drawn-taut. The-other end, -bis likewise passed around the bale, in a direction across that of the end b, and, being knottedat its extremity, the knot is brought tlv-the centro ofthe plate, and slipped under the plate al a, ns seen in the drawings. Each end of the band mayfhave several knots in it at different points, by which it canbo tightened up at pleasure. This forms a. very neat' and s'ecure'fastening, which can be almostinstantaneously applied, and the costof which will be lcss than that of any other tie heretofore brought in use.
It will be observed that with it,l the draught upon the bandis in a directline at all points, there bein-g no tendency whatever to twist, strain, or otherwise lbreak -it, except by direct tension. With this tie the rope cr band can he passed both laterally and longitudinally around the bale, so as to hold it secure onl every side, forming s. fastening which will be.of peculiar value in connection with safety-straps o'r bands for trunks, boxes, bales of goods, 8tc., where the ties heretofore in use are practically valueless` In -applying the device to cotton-bales with iron hoops, one end of the hoop may besttoched to the plate by rivets, and the opposite end secured in the recess of the plate by bending it at right angles with the main portion, or in such a. manner as to form a kink orprotuberance which would be theequivslent of a knot.
Havingjhus described my invention, what I claim as` new, and `desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The look or bale-tie, formed by'bending the corners of the plsteA over, as shown at a aI a a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
` EDWARD TRUSLOW.
