vTO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. ROBINSON, of Nashua, in the coun ty of Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement inthe Mechanism for Reversing the Motion of Steam-Engines by one Eccentric, for steamboats, locomotives, and for other purposes; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this-specification, inwhich- Figural representsa side view of the eccentric, the connecting-rod, with the rock-shaft, the link, andblock, theconnecting-rod with the slide-valve, the lifting-rods, and reverse-lever mechanism.

The object of my invention is to simplify and cheapen the mechanism for rev ersingthc motion of steamengines, and at the same time to regulate the cut-ofl ofthe steam into, the cylinder with a greater precision, and also provide a certain means by which the steam is entirely out off from the cylinder and the engine stopped by the reversing-lever, in case the throttle-valve should become inoperative.
My invention consists in arranging the link centrally on the rockshaft, which is connected with the eccentric on the main shaft, and also connecting the sliding-valve rod and the lifting-rod directly with the centre of the block, so as to cfi'cct the purposes hereinafter more fully described.
That others may be enabled to makesnd use my invention, I will describe it" more in detail, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
The arrangement of the mechanism for reversing the motion of locomotive, marine, or stationary steamengincs, as well as making the most perfect adjustable cut-oil, is so very simple in its construction, and com-- prises so few parts, that it will be readily understood; the cylinder A, stean1-cl1est B, and slide valve b all being constructed and arranged in the usual manner. The valve-connecting rod a and the shifting-rod d are both attached to the pin 2' in the movable block 0, which is so fitted as to slide freely in the link 0, which, being curved, the radius conforming with the length of the connecting-rod a, to where it is jointed to the valve-rodf, so that when the block 0 is moved in the link 0, which is secured centrally on the end of the rock-shaft D, and the link is in a vertical position,-the valve 6 will not be moved by sliding the block a in either direction; and when the block is placed centrally with the rock-shaft I), both of the ports in the steam-chest. The rock-shaft D may be provided with an arm,j, to which is attached the connecting-bar g, with the ring Inwhich works on the eccentric, k, on the crank-shaft H, so that only one eccentric is required to perform all of the functions that have heretofore required two or more eccentrics. I
The block a, fitted to slide in the curved link 0, is operated by the simple arrangement of the hand-lever E, connecting-rod F, and tumble-shaft G, so as to reverse the motion of the engine, adjust the cut-oil" of steamto a great nicety, and entirely shut oil thesteam from the cylinder.
Thus it will be seen that the plainest and most easily-wrought-work,and the fewest number of pieces, arranged as above described, are all that is necessary to produce the results above mentioned.
I do not claim broadly the arrangement of the rock-shaft, link, sliding block, and lever by which the motion =of an engine is reversed; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Connecting both the valve-rod a and the lifting-rod d to the sliding block a, and the arrangement 0t tuc k-shaft D, arm j, and eccentric, k, for giving an equalized motion to the link O, when said partsare combined with the tumble-shaft G, rod and lever E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
