Be it known that I, HOMER LEWIS, of Bennington, in the county of Bennington, and State .of Vermont,have

invented a new-and improvedAdjustable Spirit-Level; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification.

Thedrawing represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved spirit-level.

This invention relates to a new spirit-level and plumb, which is so arranged that both the level as well as the plumb-vial can, when once displaced by the shrinkage of the material, or by other causes, be easily readjusted.

The invention consists, iirst, in securing the level-vial to a spring, which is fastened to the block, or to a box held therein, and in having the other endI of the vial up-andfdown adjustable, by means of a suitable screw.

The invention also consists in fastening the plumb-vial with both ends, by means of screws, to a metal plate, hidden in the block, whilea spring presses the vial out against the heads of the'screws.

Both vials can thus be easily adjusted in their respective places,

A, in the drawing, represents the block in which the vials are held. B is the level-vial. It is hield in a. metal box, C, which is, with one end, either by means of a screw, a, or otherwise, fastened to a spring, D, that is secured-to or projecting from a metal plate, E, as shown, or from the bottom of a recess cut into the block for the reception of the vial. i

The other end of the box C is, by means of a screw, b, connected with the plate E, sothat by turning the4 screw b the vial can be brought into any desired position, it swinging on the spring D.

- By means of this one screw, b, therefore, the whole vial can B be regulated, while heretofore adjustable vials have always been regulated by two springs. v f Q F is the plumb-vial. It is also held in a box, Gr, which is by means of screws c c connected with and adjusted on a plate, H, that is secured to the block A, on one face of a vertical slot, cut through the same. The upper and lower ends of this slot are covered by metal plates d el, that are screwed to the block. These plates hide the screws c, and prevent their being meddled with by careless persons. A spring, e, which is interposed between G and H, forces the box away from H against tho heads of the screws c. ',.llhe vialis vis? ible from both sides of the block, as an aperture, f, is for that purpose cut horizontally through the block.

The level-vial box C, and its fastening and adjusting-devices, are hidden by moans of arexnovable coveringplate, y. l l l I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. vMaking a level-vial adjustable in its blockby securing one end of the box C, in which the vial is held,

. to a. spring, D, and the other end, by means of a screw, b, to a plate, E, or its equivalent, substantially as herein shown and described. f

2. An adjustable plumb-vial, F, when secured in a. box, G, which is by means of screws c c connected with a plate, H, or its equivalent, all being arranged within a slot, out through the block A, the ends of thc slot being covered by means of plates LZ d, as set forth.
