Letters Patent No. 79,342, dated June 30, 1868 IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR HDPPING BEER.
itefitlgztule reform: a in time ifihttat haunt zmt' making out at'tte same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known-that I,.WILLI'AM S. HAIGBT, of Watertordflh the county of Saratoga,-an'd State of New York, have invented a new and improved Beer-Hopping Apparatus; and Isdo hereby-declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable othersyskilled' in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved beer-hopping-apparatus, taken on the plane of the line a: z, fi g. 2.
Figure 2 his. vertical transverse section of the same, taken onthe plane or the line y y,-fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a'detail side view of a series of hopping-boxes, arranged into one continuous apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention rclatestoa new apparatus for hopping beer, and for extracting beer from hops, and consists in the application of a stirrer in the extractor-box, and of suitable pipes for drawing of? the liquid, and for pre venting its over-flow: also in the arrangement ofa valve -in the lower part ofthe apparatus, for discharging the spent hops.
A, in the drawing, representsabox, made of wood or other suitablematerial, of rectangular or other form, and of suitable size. It is provided with an sir-tight-closing cover, B, which is removable, and which is-held in place by means of bolts a d, that are hingcdto the body of the box. A portion, C, of the cover may be securely fixed to the box, for the several pipes to pass into .or through; thereby the removal ofithe main part Bot the cover is facilitated. I
, Within the box is arranged'a perforated false bottom, D, and a perforated false cover, E, both, of which are removable. Between the false bottom and the false cover is-arranged a longitudinal shaft, F, which has its bearings in the ends of the box,'and which is, on the outside, provided with acrankorpulley, b, by means of which it receives rotary motion. v
The shaft should be s o arranged that it can be easily lifted but, whenever desired, so as to allow the false bottom'to be taken out. Therefore the crank b is secured tospin, 0, which passes throughthe stuiiing-bcst d in the end of the box, and then into a so'ckct, provided in the'end of the shaft; Thevsocket is square or feathered, or otherwise so arranged that the pin 0 will be locked to-the shaft, so astb turn it.'. By then drawing out the pin 0; the shaft will be releasedst one end, and can then be easily lifted out, as its other end rests -in a short, and, if need be, slotted box, a, as is clearly shown iniig. 1.
. On the shaft F is mounted a series-of suitably-constructed stirrer-s, ff, which work through the hope that are held between D and Ef Into the cover 13, or rathcr'into the fixed part 0 of the same. enters a supply-pipe, G, throughwhich the liquor. to be treated is lot into the box.
H is a dischargepipe. The same enters the box bclow'thc false bottom-D, as shown.
I is an overflow-pipe, which fits with one end below the false bottom D, and which passes up tothe under side of the cover, and then out, either directly into the adjoining box A, as in fig. 3, or into the-discharge-pipe H beyond the tap g, arranged therein, us-in fig. 1. v i I J is a pipe, leading from the top of one box to that of the other,, to convey the aroma and vapors from one box to another. If only one box should be employed, or even, where a series of boxes is used; it may be found of advantage to letthe aroma-pipeJ-lead into the overflow-pipe I, as is clearly shown in fig'. 1. A series of such boxes may be arranged alongside of each other, as in fig. 3, or abovc'each other,'or beotherwise arranged in connection with each other. I
The hops to be treated are placediupon the-falsebottom D, and coveredby'the cover E. Liquor is then introduced through the-pipe G, aiidtho stirrer set in' motion,-whilc steam is let-into the lower compartment, through a pipe, K. i
The lower compartment may also be-hcatcd by means of a worm arranged therein, in which worm steam or other'hot liquid is containe Through the bottom and false bottom of the box A maybe fitted a plug, L, which, when drawn out, allows I the dischnrge o f the hops from the box, without requiring them to be taken out from the top. In place of the plug, a tube, M, may be used, as in fig. 2, the said tube being closed by means of a valve, N, that is operated by a lever on the upper part of the box, as shown. The apparatus should also he'provided with afgauge, O, to ficilitntethe uscertnining of the heightof the stantially as herein shown and described,
liquid in the box. p
Having thus described my invention, claim .as nemnnd desire to securehy Letters Patent" 1. Arranging a rotary stirrer, f, in ahopping-apparatus, between two perforated shelves D and E, sub- 2. The arrangement, in a beer-hopping apparatus, of the discharge-pipe H and ovcrilow pipe L, both arranged substantially in the manner herein shown and described, the overflow-pipe entering the discharge beyond the tap g in the latter, asset fol-tin.
8. Abeer-hopping apparatus,- consisting of the box A, air-tight cover'B, perforated false bottom D, and perforatedfalse cover E of the stirrer F f, dischargepipe H, overflow-pipe I, and uroma-conductor J, all made and. operating substantially as herein shown and described.
34'. Making the stirrer-shaft F removable, by suspending one ,end upon the pin or arbor c'of the drivingcrank or pulley, substantially as herein shown and described.
v 5. The application of the plug L, or its equivalent, through the real and false bottoms of the box A, for the purpose-of facilitating thedischarge of the spent hops, as set forth. I
Theahove specification of 'my invention signed by me, this 9th day of May, 1868.
WILLIAM S. HAIGHT.
