SAFETY DEVICE FOR PRESSURE-REGULATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,895, dated June 20, 1905.
Application ilcd June 19,1903. Serial No. 162,148.
T0 all whom, it nifty concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM U. GRIFFITHS, a citizen of' the United States, residing in the city ofl Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Pressure-Regulators, of which the followingV is a specification.
In order to prevent the flooding of cellars and other places wherein water pressure regulators are located, vit is desirable that a safety device be connected to or associated with the said regulators. It is the object of this invention to provide such a device, which is effective, and which may also be economically and readily applied to a regulator of usual construction.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse section through the regulator and through the device constituting my invention; and,
Figure 2 is illustrative of' a modified construction of the invention.
In the drawings,
o designates the body portion of a pressure regulator into which water enters through a port or opening and from which the Water escapes through the port or opening c. A cap Z is provided which covers the port L and which is connected to one end of a pivoted lever e.
The opposite end of the lever e is connected to a rod g which is provided with a laterally extending flange or plate e' which may be formed integral with the said rod g. Projecting beyond the flange or plate i is a screwthreaded projection 7:: which is adapted to engage a screw-threaded opening formed in a connecting section which is also provided with a lateral ilange or plate m corresponding to the plate The opening extends entirely through the connecting section Z and its opposite end is also screw-threaded and adapted to receive the screw-threaded end of the rod 0 which extends through aspring casing p which is connected to the body (L of the pressure regulator.
Interposed between the casing p and the .the cup-shaped lining n.
flange q formed upon the inside of the body a of the regulator is a flexible diaphragm 1 through which the projection 7, passes, the said rods g and o being connected together by means of the connecting device Z in the manner illustrated. The flanges or plates f; and m may be moved toward and from each other by screwing the rods g and o in and out and are adapted to clamp the diaphragm r between them as is clearly illustrated.
The casing p is provided with an extension or prolongation t, the inner side of which is screw-threaded and adapted to receive a screwthreaded cap a. The said cap u may be adjusted in the extension or prolongation t by screwing it to the right or to the left.
Located within the said cap a and within the extension or prolongation t is a cup-shaped lining c of suitable material preferably rubber, the inner edges of which extend beyond the inner edges of' the cap a, and engage the sides of the extension t and are located outside of the annular flange fw formed integral with the walls of the casing p. The said flange w is connected to the walls of the casing p at about the point where the extension t is joined to the said casing. The rod 0 extends through the casing p, extension t, cap u, and lining n, passing through the outer walls of said cap and said lining.
Located inside the said lining o and in contact therewith is a washer which is loosely mounted upon the said rod o. The said washer m is held in contact with the outer end wall of the lining n by means of the wire spring y which surrounds the said rod 0, and the opposite end of which is in contact with the plate m. By reason of this construction, it will be seen that the tendency of the wire spring is to depress or force the diaphragm r away from the casing p and also that it holds the washer a' in contact with the outer wall of By adjusting the cap u the pressure of' the spring y may be increased orr diminished as desired.
The construction shown in Figure 2 is similar to that shown in Figure 1 except Vthat from the former the annular flange w is omitted. By reason of the omission of this iiange, it is desirable to extend the lower edge of the cup- IOO shaped lining e so that it is in contact with a portion of the curved inner side of the casing p. The inner edge portion of the said lining fu is flared outwardly as indicated at z in said Figure 2.
While. I have illustrated and described the annular flange i as being formed integral with the casing p, it is to be understood, of course, that it may be formed separately therefrom and subsequently attached thereto. rI`l1e particular manner of constructing this flange,
' however, constitutes no part of my invention.
It will, of course, be understood, that in the installation of a pressure regulator, the safety device as herein illustrated and described is placed in position, and that subsequently thereto, if the diaphragm fr becomes ruptured in any manner, the water is prevented from escaping' into the cellar or other apartment and flooding the same. The water escaping from the regulator would pass into the casing p, thence into the cup-shaped lining' e and would press the walls 4ol said lining firmly against the inner side oi' the walls of the extension t and the cap u, as is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the body portion of a pressure regulator, a casing connected thereto, and provided with an extension and also provided with a flange which extends into and is concentric with said extension, a cap having' engagement with said extension, a flexible lining located within said cap and said extension, the edges of which are located between the said Flange and the said extension, su bstantially as described.
2. The combination of the body portion of a pressure regulator, a casing secured to said body portion, a diaphragm located between said casing, and said body portion, an extension provided upon said casing, a cap having' screw-threaded engagement with said extension, a cup shaped fiexible lining located within said cap and said extension, a rod extending through said cap and said lining, a washer loosely mounted upon said rod and wire coils surroundingthe said rod and adapted to hold the said washer in contact with the said lining, substantially as described.
3. The combination ot' the body portion of a pressure regulator, a casing secured to the said body portion, a flexible diaphragm located between said casing and said body portion, an extension provided upon said casing, an annular flange also provided inside said casing and extending into the said extension, a cap having' screw-threaded engagement with the said extension, a cup-shaped lining located within said cap and said extension, the edges of which lining are located between the said extension and the edges of the said flange, a rod extending through the said diaphragm and through the cup-shaped lining and the cap, a washer surrounding the said rod and a coil wire spring surrounding said rod and adapted to hold the said. washer in contact with the said cup-shapedv lining, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto signed my name this 17th day of June, A. D. 1903.
WILLIAM U. GRIFFITHS.
