CIGAR-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 792,236, dated June 13, 1905.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. RANDOLPH, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to cigar-holders, and has for its object to form a holder which will allow the teeth or lips to come in contact with the cigar or cigarette and at the same time protect the smokers of such articles from the nicotin or other poisonous matter in said articles.

My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved holder, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my improved holder, showing the same applied to a cigar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the outer holder. Fig. 3 is a like view of the inner holder or thimble. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the holder, taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1.

Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawings.

As illustrated in said drawings, 1 represents the outer holder, which is preferably formed of hard rubber or other suitable tasteless material and is of the usual conical or tapered form, so as to provide for the large opening 2 at one end 2 and the pointed mouth portion 3 at the opposite end 3. The end 3 is inwardly flaring or dished, as at 4., and in the center of this dished portion 4 is the usual smoke opening or passage-way 5 from the chamber 6 of said holder 1, while extending through the side walls 7 of said holder 1 are formed the openings 8, which communicate with said chamber 6.

An inner holder or thimble 9 is adapted to be inserted within the chamber 6 of the outer holder 1 and is preferably formed of metal,such as aluminium or other suitable material, While the shape of said thimble 9 is of the usual conical or tapered form. The inner end 10 of the thimble 9 is made square or flat, as at 11, and through this flat end 11 is the smoke opening or passage-way 12, while extending through the side walls 13 of said thimble 9 are the openings 14:, which communicate with the chamber 15 in said thimble. The large end 16 of said thimble 9 has the opening 17 communicating with the chamber 15, and the side walls 13 of said thimble are bent outwardly and backwardly from said opening 17, as at 18, to form the flange 19.

In using my improved holder the thimble 9 is placed in the chamber 6 of the holder 1 through the opening 2 at the end 2 thereof, so that the flange19 on the end 16 of said thimble will come in contact With the end 2' of said holder 1 and the openings 14 in the side walls 13 of said thimble will come opposite to the openings 8 in the side walls 7 of said holder. After the cigar A has been placed Within the chamber 15 of the thimble 9 the holder can be placed in the mouth of the smoker and such cigar lighted, so that the smoke can be drawn through the passage- ways 12 and 5 in the flat face 11 and dished portion 4 of said thimble 9 and holder 1, respectively, and into the mouth of the smoker, while the lips and teeth of the smoker will be in contact with the cigar A through the openings 8 and 14: in the holder 1 and the thimble 9, respectively. The nicotin from the cigar A will pass through the passage-way 12 in the flat face 11 on the thimble 9 and will be collected on said face 11 or else can run down said face and accumulate in the chamber 6 of the holder 1 and between the dished end 4 on said holder and the end 10 of the thimble 9, such dished end preventing the entrance of said nicotin into the mouth of the smoker through the passage-way 5 therein. When it is desired to remove the nicotin, the thimble 9 can be easily pulled out or removed from the holder 1, so that the flat face 11 on said thimble can be wiped ofi to remove the nicotin therefrom and the chamber 6 of the holder 1 cleansed in any desired manner to remove any accumulation of nicotin therein.

If desired, the openings 14 in the side walls 13 of the thimble 9 can be made slightly larger than the openings 8 in the holder 1, as shown in Fig. 5, in order to overcome any particular adjustment when the thimble 9 is inserted into the holder 1 and at the same time will overcome the possibility of the teeth and lips of the smoker coming in contact with the side walls 13 of the thimble 9 through the openings 8 in the side walls 7 of the holder 1.

It will thus be seen that my improved cigarholder will enable a person to hold the same firmly between his teeth or lips, while at the same time he can attain the taste or flavor-of the cigar or cigarette by reason of such teeth or lips being in contact with the cigar or cigarette through the openings in the sides of the outer holder and inner thimble. it will also be seen that the holder will prevent the entrance of nicotin into the mouth of the smoker and will collect said nicotin on the thimble and within the holder, while at the same time the holder and thimble can be separated, when desired, so that said nicotin can be removed, and both the holder and thimble can be kept thoroughly clean at ail times.

The holder is simple, cheap, and efficient for the purpose for which it is intended and can be made pleasing to the eye, as well as tasteless to the mouth of the smoker.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder for cigars, cigarettes, &c.,.comprising an outer holder having a smoke passage-way in the end and openings through the side walls thereof, in combination with an inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder, said thimble having a smoke passageway in the end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in the side walls of the outer holder.

2. A holder for cigars, cigarettes, &c., comprising an outer holder having openings in the side walls thereof and being provided with an inwardly flaring or dished portion at its end for the smoke passage-way therein, in combination with an inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer hold er, said thimble having a smoke passage-way in the end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in the side walls of the outer holder.

3. A holder for cigars, cigarettes, 860., comprising an outer holder having a smoke passage-way in the apex end and openings through the side walls thereof, in combination with an inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder and having its open end provided with a flange for fitting against'the open end of the outer holder, said thimble having a smoke passage-way in the end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in the side Walls of the outer holder.

4. A holder for cigars,cigarettes, &c. comprising a tapered outer holder having a smoke passage-way in the apex end and openings through the side walls thereof, in combination with a tapered inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder, said thimble having a smoke passage-way in the end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in'the side walls of the outer holder.

5. A holder for cigars, cigarettes, 850., comprisinga tapered outer holder having openings in the side walls thereof and being provided with an inwardly flaring or dished portion at its apex end for the smoke passage-way therein, in combination witha tapered inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder, said thimble having a smoke passage-way'in the end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in the side walls of the outer holder.

6. A holder for cigars, cigarettes, &c., comprising a tapered outer holder having a smoke passage-way in the apex end and openings in the side Walls thereof, in combination with a tapered inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder and having a flat apex end, said thimble being provided with a smoke passage-way in said flat apex end and with openings through the-side walls thereof for positioning opposite the openings in the side walls of the outer holder.

7. Aholder for cigars, cigarettes, &c., comprising a tapered outer holder having a smoke passage-way in the apex end and openings through the side walls thereof, in combination with a tapered inner thimble adapted to be inserted in the outer holder and having its open end provided with a flange for fitting against the open end of the outer holder, said thimble having a smoke passage-way in the apex end thereof and provided with openings through the side walls thereof forpositioning opposite the openings in the side walls of the outer holder.
