PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. HARDY, OF JANESVILLE, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTI-I TO ERLING K. LOVERUD, OF STOUGHTON, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED SHEET-MUSIC AND SUSPENSION-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 792,210, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed October 8, 1904. Serial No. 227,755.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at J anesville, county of Rock, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Sheet-Music and Suspension- Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet-music; and it pertains to the construction of the binding, the location of a duplicate title, and the device for suspending the sheet from its binding edge in the rack of a cabinet.
My invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the invention, comprising a sheet of music provided with a suspension-rod permanently secured to the binding edge and a duplicate title arranged transversely to the printed matter therein. Fig. 2 represents an open sheet of music provided with my improvements, and Fig. 3 represents the lower edge of the sheet as it appears when laid in a horizontal position.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A represents a plurality of sheets of music, which when bound together and open, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, are folded in two separate places, said sheets being centrally folded at B around the suspension-rod G and also creased and temporarily folded at one side of the center, as indicated at D, which represents the temporary fold, at which point the sheets of music are adapted to be bent when opened. It will be understood that the contiguous surfaces of that part of the sheet between the suspension-rod C and the temporary fold D are permanently secured together in any convenient manner, either by clamping-plates, stitches, or any adhesive substance, ordinary glue, however, being preferred for such purpose, and such part is referred to herein as the binding E. Thus it will be obvious that by forming the temporary fold at one side of the binding-rod the binding E and suspension-rod C are adapted to be folded forwardly against and parallel with the cover of the sheets when open, as shown in Figs. 9. and 3, whereby such parts G and E are out of the way and do not, as they might otherwise, interfere with placing the sheets of music upon the music-rack of a cabinet.
It will be understood that my device is made with especial reference to the separate sheets of music being suspended in large numbers in close proximity from their supporting-rods in the rack of a cabinet in such a manner that the bound edge of one sheet of a series will extend slightly above that of the preceding sheet in such series, and to enable the user to readily see the particular sheet of music he wishes to use I have provided a separate duplicate title arranged transversely to the printed matter within and parallel with the suspension-rod, whereby when thus suspended the title of all the sheets in a series may be readily seen and any particular one desired may be readily withdrawn from the others, as stated, without removing or otherwise disturbing the others, whereby the necessity of handling a large number of sheets of music when seeking the one desired is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A plurality of sheets of music provided with two separate folds, a permanent fold and a temporary fold, said permanent fold being formed at the center of the sheets and said temporary fold being formed at one side of the center, in combination with a suspensionrod secured to the folded or binding edge of said sheets.
2. A plurality of sheets of music provided with two separate folds, a permanent fold and a temporary fold, said permanent fold being formed at the center of the sheets and said temporary fold being formed at one side of the center; a duplicate title printed parallel with and between said permanent and temporary folds and a binding-rod secured within the binding of said permanent fold, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDIVARD A. HARDY.
