ATTACHMENT FOR HATCHETS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 790,973, dated May 30, 1905.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES OSWALD OLIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful I mproved Attachment for Hatchets, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device that is to be applied to the free end of a hatchet or hammer handle, said device having claws for the purpose of engaging and withdrawing nails and also having a broad lip which forms the fulcrum when the handle is turned to withdraw the nail.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment capable of being applied to the ordinary hatchet or hammer handle and in such a position that the workman may quickly and easily take hold of a nail when it is desired to withdraw the same for any purpose whatsoever.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device that is exceedingly simple in construction, cheap as to cost, and one that may be applied to a handle and sold together or separately, as desired.

With these briefly-stated objects in view my invention comprises certain details of construction and novelties of combination and arrangement, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hatchet provided with my invention. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, and Fig. 6 is a detailed section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.

In carrying out my invention I employ in the construction of my improvement a sleeve A, preferably oval and having the outer end provided with a lateral extension B, from one side of which projects a claw C, which is of the usual construction of nail-claws, and from the drawings it will be seen that this claw is arranged upon one side of and tangential to the bore of the sleeve, so that the central slotted portion will be beyond the extreme side of the sleeve. Upon the opposite side of the sleeve to that from which the claw projects is arranged a lip D, which extends from the end of the lateral projection to a point beyond the center of the sleeve. This lip'may-be provided with a hatchet edge, if desired; but I purpose to make it comparatively dull,.so that the object with which it comes in contact will not be defaced when a nail is withdrawn. This lip forms an important feature in my invention, and its object is twofoldfirst, that of providing the fulcrum-point, that is arranged some distance from the center of the claw, and, secondly, it provides an edge which can be inserted under or back of a strip when the latter is in such position that it is inconvenient to insert the edge of a hatchet or claws of a hammer.

This device is designed to be used principally upon hatchets and upon the free end of the handle, the claws being positioned to project at right angles to the blade of the hatchet and upon the side of the handle from which the head projects, so that when the hatchet is being used by a plasterer or carpenter they may without materially changing their grip upon the handle easily turn their hand, so that a nail may be engaged and withdrawn in a very quick and easy manner. While I have shown and described my invention as applied to hatchets, I desire it understood that it may be used with much advantage upon hammers or other tools.

In order to securely hold the device in position, I provide an opening E upon one side of the sleeve, through which is inserted a screw that enters the handle and tightly holds the device in position, and in order to easily apply the device I make the interior of the sleeve tapering from the inner to the outer end, and it will readily appear that the device may be inserted over the handle and hammered down tightly in position. This is desirable for the reason that an exact fit may not be necessary when the taper is out upon the handle and also that it provides a stronger and more durable construction, as the thicknesls of the sleeve is increased at its outer en By arranging the claws upon one side of the sleeve, so that the center portion or slot will be arranged slightly beyond the sleeve and handle, it will be evident that a nail may be easily gripped between the claws without the nail coming in contact with the handle. This is of the utmostimportance, as it is often desirable to draw a nail to secure one or more grips thereon, so that the nail may be drawn without being bent, and with the center of the claw arranged in relation to the handle as described it will be readily seen that no matter how long the nail may be a number of grips may be had thereon and the nail drawn without its coming in contact with the handle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the kind described comprising a sleeve havingalateral projection formed upon one side thereof, a claw extending from the said sleeve and the lateral projection, and a lip projecting from the said sleeve and projection, and from the opposite side from which the claw projects.

2. A device of the kind described comprising the sleeve, having a lateral projection upon one side thereof, a claw projecting from the said sleeve and projection, the center of the claw being beyond the side of the sleeve, and a lip projecting from the sleeve and projection.

3. As a new article of manufacture a device comprising a sleeve having a lateral projection on one side, and at one end thereof, a claw projecting from the said sleeve and lateral projection, and a lip formed upon the opposite side of the sleeve and projection.

4. A hatchet attachment comprising 'a detachable sleeve, a claw carried by the sleeve adjacent one end and on one side of the bore of the sleeve, and a lip formed on the sleeve and extending in the opposite direction from the claw, as and for the purpose set forth.
