Description
I @nimh tif etentffite.
MARTIN STREETER, OF N EW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSEL t AND ARTELL AUSTIN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Paare No. 79,086, me June 2s, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-OPERATOR.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARTIN STREETER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have inventeda new and improved Blind-Opener and Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malteiand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of 4this specification.
The gnre is a horizontal section of a. window-frame and attached shutters, illustrating my invention.
My invention lhas for its object to furnish an improved device, by Vmeans df which window-blinds and shirtters may be opened, closed, and secured in. place when fully closed, when fully opened, or when opened at any' desired angle, which shall be simple in construction, and easily operated; and it consists in the combination of the pivoted lever and guiderod with the window-sill and blind or shutter, and in securing the blind or shutter, when adjusted in position, by clamping the pivoted lever to the guard-plate by means of ascrewlknob or handle.
A represents the side casings 'of the' window-frame, B represents the window-sill, andO represents the blinds or shutters. About the construction of all these parts there-is nothing new. D is a lever, which is placed in a recess or notch formed'in the window-sill B, and which is pivoted to said sill, as shown` in the figure. The pivoted part of the lever D, and the recess in which said lever is placed, are coveredl and protected by a guard-plate, E, as shown in the drawing. F is a guide-rod, which passes through an eye formed upon the cuter end of the lever D, and the ends of which are bent and attached to the blind or shutter C, near its front end and rear edges. When the window-ledge is narrow, the inner end of the' lever may pass strightin, and has a screw-handle or knob, Gr, screwed upon its projecting end.V When the window-'ledge is wide, it is more convenient to bend the inner end of the lever D upward at right angles, and let'it pass out through a curved slot in the guard-plate E. In the case first described, the lever is clampecbsecuring the blind r shutter in place, by screwing the knob or handle G against the edge of the guard-plate E. In the case last described, the blind or shutter is secured in place by screwing,r the linob or handle G against the side of the guardplate E. By this construction the blinds or shutters maybe opened, closed, and secured in any desired position, without opening the window, and no hooks or catches are required to secure the blinds either open er shut.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Securing the blind C in any desired position, by melansot' the screw-handle G, upon the screw-shank of the lever D, ,acting upon the curved edge of the plate E, as herein shown and described'. Y
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 25th day of January, 1868.
M. STREETER,
Witnesses WM. F. McNA-MARA, JAMES T. GRAHAM.
