ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented May'23, 1e05,
PATENT OFFICE.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,673, dated May23, 1905, Application filed December 28, 1904. Serial No. 238,571.
To (til whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS OABALKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lesterville, in the county of Yankton and State of South Dakota, have inventeda new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of a harnessbuckle, and has for its principal objects to prevent catching and tearing of the fly-net, the horses tail being caught thereby, and marring by rubbing action against other parts, as the harness-saddle, strap, &c.,
The buckle is intended for use on the reins, but is equally adapted to other parts of harness where it is desirable to provide protec-.
tion afforded thereby.
The invention consists of the special construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved buckle. Fig. '2 is asectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view with the parts adjusted adapted for connection of the straps. the latter being shown broken away; and Fig. A is a bottom plan view of the buckle.
My improved buckle is constructed with loop-shaped members A B, hingedly connected by means of an eyed extension 0 of the member A, and a suitable pin D, arranged in the eyed. extension, having its ends supported in the side walls of the member B. It will be noticed (see Figs. 2 and 4:) that the member A is formed with bottom, top, and side walls 1 2 3 and that the member B is constructed with top walls 2, side walls 3, and left open on its under side (see Fig. 4) or without a bottom Wall 1, forming a part of the member A. The side walls 3 of the member B are connected by a bar E, to which the buckle holding or supporting strap F is secured and with which strap a similar strap Gr may be connected by means of my special buckle, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. This view shows the parts A and B adjusted to position to permit the forward or free end of the connected strap to be inserted under the top wall of the member B.
In the make-up of my invention I employ a tongue H, having support on the pin D. The upper or free end of the tongue H should not project above the upper surface of the members A B, and the latter are recessed in the abutting edges of their top walls 2 2', as at I, adapted for receiving the free end of the tongue H when the members A B are in normal position.
The construction of my improved buckle will be understood from the above description.
The members A B are intended to be constructed smooth and without sharp corners; but the special features of advantage in my buckle over any similar buckle known to me are its being formed of two loop-shape members hingedly connected and the peculiar tongue, with means on the members A and B for clamping and locking the tongue, and thereby providing a secure fastening for the fastened strap Gr. Additional advantage resides in my invention in the support provided for the free end of the tongue H, whereby increased or improved rigidity is had to withstand unusual strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A buckle, constructed with two loopshape members hingedly connected, a tongue carried by and located between said members and with its free end adapted to be clamped between abutting ends of the members, and a transverse bar on one member whereby the LOUIS OABALKA, OF LESTERVILLE, SOUTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- buckle may be secured to its supporting-strap,
substantially as described.
2. A buckle constructed with two loopshape members hingedly connected, a tongue carried by and located between said members,
and a transverse bar on one member whereby the buckle may be secured to its supportingstrap, as shown and described.
3. The combination in a buckle, of two loopshape members hinged together, a tongue carried by the hinge connection of the members, having its free end projecting substantially -flush With the upper surface of the buckle,
the members being adapted to clamp the free end of the tongue, and a'transverse bar on one member whereby the buckle may be secured to its supporting-strap.
4:. The combination inabuckle, of two loopshape members, means hingedly connecting the members, a tongue supported and located between the members, with its free end adapted to be clamped thereby, the adjacent top edges of the members having notches adapted to receive the tongue, and a transverse bar on one member whereby the buckle may be secured to its supporting-strap, substantially as described.
