WINDOW-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,535, dated May 23, 1905.

Application filed April 2'7, 1904- Serial No. 205.117.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1', JOI-INA. SwENsoN, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Guards, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention .relates to window-guards; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in connection with the windows of apartment houses, d Welling houses, hotels, and other buildings of this class in order to prevent children and others from falling out of such windows; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a window guard constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol,- lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside View of a window provided with my improved guard; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the guard only and showing parts thereof in section; Fig. 3, a partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an end view ofone of the parts of the guard, and Fig.- 5 a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.

1n the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary window-frame having the usual top and bottom sashes b and c. The frame a is provided with the usual side beads or strips d. e, and f, between which are the spaces g and it, in which the sashes b and c are placed, the sash c being placed in the space 72,, and in the practice of my invention 1 provide a window-guard which comprises two similar side pieces t'and transverse bars two of which'are shown.

The side pieces 6 of the guard are provided with transverse recesses 17, and the bars 1' are provided with ears 1' adapted to enter said recesses, and these ears at the ends thereof in the form of construction shown are flat in transverse section, and at the ends thereof in the form of construction shown the said ears are also segmental in form, and at one end of the bars the said ears are provided on the upper side thereof with notches or recesses 7' said side piece 0. The other side piece is then held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the cars at theopposite ends of the bars j are inserted into the recesses 11 in said side piece, after which the latter is dropped into the corresponding space it, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. and this will also hold the guard in position.

It will also be understood that my improved windowguard is intended for use only when the lower sash is raised, and when it is desired to close the sash the guard may be removed by raising one of the side pieces un til the bars 1' can be detached therefrom, after which said bars and the other side piece may be removed from the window-frame.

I also prefer to pass through the piecesvl and the ears 1' of the bars 1' pivot pins or bolts on, and when these are employed the device may be secured in or removed from a window in the manner herein described without disconnecting the separate parts thereof, all that is necessary being to raise one of the side pieces 71, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and then lower it into position in the operation of connecting the guard with the windowframe, and in removing the guard from the Window-frame this operation is reversed, the

the side pieces c' could be raised and lowered in the operation of placing the device in the window-frame or removing it therefrom.

If desired, the bars 1' may be made of separate pieces and be made longitudinally ad justable, so as to adapt the guard to windowframes of different widths, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

The separate parts of my improved windowguard may be made of any desired material, Wood being preferred, and the side pieces 6 may be made of any desired thickness.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A window-guard adapted to be secured in the space occupied by the lower sash when said sash is raised, said guard comprising two side pieces having transverse recesses, and bars having ears adapted to enter said recesses, said ears being segmental in form at their outer ends and being provided at one end of the bars with a notch or recess in the upper side there of and at the opposite end with a, notch or recess in the lower side thereof, subshmtially as shown and described.

2. A window-guard adapted to be secured in the space occupied by the lower sash when said sash is raised, said guard comprising two side pieces having transverse recesses, and bars having ears adapted to enter said recesses, said ears being segmental in form at their outer ends and being provided at one end of the ba rs with a notch or recess in the upper side thereof and at the opposite end with a notch or recess in the lower side thereof, and said transverse recesses in said side pieces and the ears being oblong and llat in transverse section, substantially as shown and described.
