STOVEPIPE THIMBLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,936, dated May 16, 1905.

Be it known that I, EUGENE W.- REED, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holdrege, in the county of Phelps and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastenings for stovepipes, and more especially to that class of fastenings for holding the pipe in the chimney in such way that it can be easily and quickly removed.

The object of the invention is to provide a holding means attached to a thimble that will be simple in construction, efiicient in practice, and economical to manufacture.

In describing the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like reference characters will denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener detached, and Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the thimble employed with the device.

In the drawings, A indicates a wall of a chimney, and B the opening therethrough. Fitting into this opening is the reduced end 1 of the thimble 2. The securing device comprises a body portion 1, having at one end the upper and lower tongues 5 and 6, said tongues being suitably spaced apart and parallel. Threaded through an aperture 7 in the upper tongue 5 is a set-screw 8, terminating at a point slightly to the rear of the shoulder 9, formed on the end of the tongue 6. The end 10 of the set-screw is preferably rounded. On the opposite end of the body portion 4 is an extension 11, the upper face 12 of which is approximately on a plane midway the opposing faces of the tongues 5 and 6 and forms with the body portion a shoulder 18. Intermediate of the length of the extension 11 is a set-screw 13, having its end 14 pointed and extending upwardly.

The top of the thimble 2 is provided with an opening 15, rectangular in shape. The rectangular opening 15 is preferably formed by cutting oppositely-disposed recesses in the edges of the blank,lwhich is bent to form the thimble. The opening 15 is adapted to embrace the body portion 4 of the fastener in such manner as to have the tongue 5 on the exterior of the thimble and the extension 11 and tongue 6 on the interior. The device is secured to the thimble by means of fastenings 19, passing through the extension 11 and the reduced portion 1 of the thimble.

In operation the reduced end of the thimble is inserted in the opening B, with the shoulder 18 in contact with the outer wall thereof to limit the inward movement of the thimble and the pointed end 14 of the screw 18 forced in the walls, thereby holding the thimble in position. A portion of the edge of the pipe 20 at one end thereof is then inserted in the free end of the thimble and between the tongues 5 and 6. The screw 8 is then turned until its rounded end has clamped the end of the pipe 20 therebetween, the shoulder 9 further acting as a clamp.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a Stovepipe-fastening, a thimble, a fastening device secured thereto comprising a body portion having tongues suitably spaced apart to receive a portion of the edge of an end of a pipe, one of said tongues having a shoulder formed at its end, and a clampingscrew adapted to force the pipe into engagement with the said last-named tongue in the rear of the shoulder.

2. In a stovepipe-fastening, a thimble, a fastening device secured thereto comprising a body portion with an upper and lower tongue formed on one end thereof, said tongues being adapted to receive a portion of the edge of an end of a pipe therebetween, a shoulder formed on the end of the lower tongue, and a clamping-screw passing through the upper tongue adapted to force the pipe into engagement with the lower tongue in the rear of the shoulder.

In combination,a thimble having an opening in its top, a fastening device comprising a body portion with tongues on one end and an extension on the opposite end, said body portion passing through the opening in the thimble; one of the tongues on the body portion being Within the thimble and slightly below the top thereof, whereby a portion of the edge of an end of a pipe may be inserted therebetween, and means on the exterior tongue for forcing the pipe into engagement with the tongue Within the thimble; and said extension being Within the thimble and secured thereto, and means carried by the extension Whereby the thimble may be secured Within an opening of the flue.

4. In combination, a thimble having an opening and a fastening device therefor, said fastening device comprisinga body portion having tongues on one end and an extension on the opposite end; said body portion passing thimble and securedthereto, said extension.
