TIO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it knownithat we, JOEL S. Hoon and JOHN H. Hoon, of Washington city, in the co'untyrof Washington,
and District of Columbia, have inventcdia new and useful Improvement in lPerpetual Registers; and wcdo hereby declare thatv the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, through letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view ot' a register, showing our invention, and V Figure 2 a transversesecton ofthe same, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line :a rv ofiig.'1.
'The same letters of referenceoceurring onboth iiguresindicato corresponding parts. i
I The object of our invention is to furnish a convenient and perpetual register, for showing the number of articles of each kind'that may have been sent to the wash, the price of each article on a bill of fare, or-for other like purposes; and it consists in a novel arrangement and combination of parts, whereby a veryr simple and cheap changeable register is produced.
l'lo enable others to make and use our invention, we will describe its construction and operation, by refer.- ring to the drawing, in which i i v i Arepres'ents the face-plate or card, which is punched with a series of round or square holes, a, and slots b, said slots extending, one above another, down the centre of`the plate,l or thereabouts, in a horizontal direction, and parallel with each other, from near each ofthe holes a, nearly to'the edge c of the plate or card A, and on the opposite side of the holes a said'plate A is provided with strips, d, of suitable form to receive a tablet, C, on which is printed, or otherwise delineated, thelist of articles, the number or price,` the., of which is intended. to be registered.
Instead of thc strips d, the plate A, when made of met-al', might have a series of clips partially punched out of it, so as to bend over the 'edge of the tablet, and thus retainv it on the` plate A, or, when this plate is made of card-board, the list of articles might be printed upon it, or on a slip of paper pasted to it. The upper part of the plate A is punctured with two openings, e and z', the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter.
The back plate vIB may be punched with holes and slots, Sto., precisely the same as the face-plate; the holes a and the apertures e-and t', however, in it, are unnecessary'. The two .platesA and B,are then placed together, in such a position that the slots b in the back one come behind the tablet C, and in range with the slots b in the face-plate. Between these two plates is inserted a series `of slides, m, which are provided at one end with a stud, s, passing rearwardly through the slots b', by which means that end of the slidcfis supported; their other ends are provided with knobs n, thc Shanks' of which, passing through the slots b in theface-plate, sustain the other end of the slides, and by which they may be slipped backward or forward, to bring any desired numberor figure on the face of the slide in the centre of the hole ai, in range with it' and with the article on the tablet C tobe registered against. 'lhese slides may have the iiguresengraved or otherwise marked on the face, or they may be constructed so as to attach a printed or marked card.
In theupper part, between the' -platcs A and B, are inserted two disks; D, represented.v in the drawing in red lines, the one'bei'ng marked radially with the'names of the months, and the other with the days of the month; these are supported on pivots r passing through the plates A and B, in such position that their peripheries extendslightly beyond the edge of the plates, so that, by applying the finger thereto, they may be turned to bring the month and the day of the month so as to be seen through-the apertures e and t', orI they may be iturncd by a knob on the axle; thus the time isr registered by adjusting the disksD, and the number of each article on the tablet, by moving the slide in range with it until the proper figure is brought in view through the holea opposite to, it, and ifl it is desired to show the total number of pieces thus recorded, we mark the figures on two or three of the slides at the lower end of the column, transversely to the length of the slide, and then add up the figures in the column, and register the units by the bottom slide, the tens by the one above in and the hundreds by the third from-thc bottom. i
This article is intended t0 be hung in the housekcepers room, or be tacked in the' top of travelling-trunk, for which latter purpose a. slight modification in foi-m or outline may be made. v
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The slides m, constructed with rearwardly-projecting spurs e at one end, and knobs n on the 4front side of their opposite ends, arranged in combination with the slotted plates or cards A B for operation together, as shown, and for the purposes described. 2. The disks D, in combination with the slotted plates A B nndslides fnz, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
