SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. "789,499, dated May 9, 1905.

To (Ll/Z whom it natty concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns LIG H'IHOLDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canonsburg, in the county of i/Vashington, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire-Splices; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire-splices, and more particularly to those designed for use in connecting electric wires where good contact is desired, and has for its object to provide a splice with which two wires may be quickly and securely connected.
Another object is to provide a splice which will be simple of construction and cheap of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be appar ent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specilic construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a casting 5 of cylindrical shape, having an enlargement 6 at one side intermediate of its ends. Extending inwardly from the ends of the casting are longitudinal slots 7 and formed centrally through the casting and communicating at its ends with the slots there is a cylindrical passage 8.
Formed transversely in the casting inwardly of the slot 7 and communicating with the passage 8 adjacent to its ends are pockets 9, in which there are slidably-disposed blocks 10, the outer faces of which slant outwardly from the outer end of the block, the forward ends of these outer faces lying normally flush with the face of the casting. The end portions of the casting are provided with threads lLwhieh extend to points inwardly of the pockets 9, and engaged with the threaded portion at either end of the casting are an inner nut 12 and an outer nut 13. The ends of the casting are slightly enlarged, so that as the nuts 13 are screwed in the direction of the ends of the casting the portions of the latter at opposite sides of the slot 7 will be moved toward each other to clamp a wire engaged in the slot. It will be understood that the ends of the wires extend into the passage 8 and that when the nuts 12 are screwed toward the center of the casting they will come into engagement with the block 10 to force the latter against the wires.
Formed in the enlargement 6 are threaded passages 6, in which are engaged set-screws 14. The passages 6 communicate with the passage 8, so that the set-screws may be operated to bear against the wires.
What is claimed is A wire-splice comprising a cylindrical body portion having longitudinal slots opening through its ends and having a longitudinal passage communicating with the slots, said body portion also having pockets communicating with the passage and being provided with threads at its ends extending inwardly of the pockets, blocks slidabl y engaged in the pockets and having slanting outer faces, nuts engaged with the threaded portions and arranged for operation to move the portions of the body at the sides of the slots toward each other and for engagement of the slanting faces of the blocks to move said blocks inwardly, said slots and passages being arranged for the reception of wires, and set-screws engaged in the body portion and arranged for operation to engage the wires disposed in the passage.
