SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,175, dated May 9, 1905.

Be it known that l, GILBERT W. SHERIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Friting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates especially to typewriting machines which are commonly used as toys for the amusement of children, but which are also capable of practical use for certain purposes.
The object is to produce a type-writing machine which can be manufactured at very low cost, and yet shall be more convenient to handle and operate than other type-writing machines of the same class.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of the improved type-writing machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. l with the type-wheel in its normal position. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but with the type-wheel in its printing position. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the inking-pad.
A base-plate c is provided for and forms a part of the machine, being intended to rest upon and cover the paper or other surface to be written upon and being provided with a longitudinal slot through which the printing of a line of characters may be effected,
the paper or other printing-surface being otherwise shielded by the base-plate from contact with any of the parts of the machine which might cause an undesirable transfer of ink to the printing-surface. The opposite edges of the base-plate c are turned over upon themselves, as at c, to form a guide for the carriage d, which supports the type-Wheel, and is movable upon the plate to permit characters to be printed successively in line. The

tering with the slot 7; in the base-plate c and permitting only a single type character to make contact with the printing-surface when the type-wheel is depressed. It is also provided with an index or pointer f for coperation with the scale g, which is formed on the corresponding iange c of the base-plate c to indicate the proper spacing. At one end the carriage is formed with an extension t, which is somewhat elastic, the carriage (Z, as well as the plate c, being stamped out of sheet metal or other suitable material. The extension t supports a pin or shaft e', upon which is loosely mounted a spacing-wheel the extension being suitably slotted to receive the wheel. A flat spring is secured to the carriage for cooperation with the spacing-wheel to prevent backward movement of the carriage and also to indicate by the click as each tooth of the Wheel passes from the end of the spring the proper advance of the carriage. The surface of the plate c is roughened or provided with a rack m for-cooperation with the spacing- Wheel a, the proper rotation of the wheel being thereby assured.
The fiat-disk-type-wheel n may be of usual construction, having the type characters formed upon its under surface, as at 0, with the corresponding characters upon its Lipper surface and being provided with a handle 7) for convenience in rotation. It is mounted by a suitable pin or stud q, with a vertical axis, upon the carriage (Z in such position that the pressure of the linger upon the wheel near the index or pointer f causes the corresponding type character to be pressed into contact with the printing-surface through the aperture c Beneath the wheel there is secured to the carriage (Z the inking device, which is preferably formed as a three-armed plate fr, (shown in Fig. 5,) having at the extremity of each end an ink-pad s, so that the type characters of the type-wheel shall be inked during the movement of the wheel to bring to the printing-point the desired characters.
In the operation of the machine the thumb or a iinger of the left hand of the operator is applied to the spacing-wheel 7c, and by suitable pressure thereon the carriage is advanced TOO space by space. At the same time the type- W'neel is turned by the right hand of the operator to bring the desired character to the printing-point, and by pressure of the linger upon the margin of the type-Wheel such character is brought into contact with the printing'- surface.
rIhe machine is not only extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, but is convenient in operation, preserves the printingsurface vfrom unintentional Contact With inked surfaces, and is strong and durable.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A type-Writing machine, comprising a at-disl type-Wheel, a movable carriage upon which the type-Wheel is supported with a vertical axis and a base-plate formed to engage the oarriageand permit movement thereof, said base-plate being adapted to rest upon the printing-surface and being provided With a slot to permit impressions to be made, substantially as described.
2. A type-Writing' machine, comprising a flat-disk type-Wheel, a movable carriage upon which the type-wheel is mounted, with a vertical axis and provided with an aperture to permit the impression of a single character to be made, and a base-plate formed to engage the carriage and permit movement thereof, said base-plate being adapted to rest upon the printing-surface and being provided with a slot for registration With the aperture in the carriage, substantially as described.
3. A type-Writing machine, comprising a type-Wheel, a carriage of sheet material upon which the type-Wheel is mounted and provided with an elastic extension, a spacing-Wheel mounted in said extension, a spring-pawl to engage the spacing-Wheel as it rotates and a base-plate adapted to engage the carriage, substantially as described.
4. A type-Writing machine, comprising a type-Wheel, acarriage of sheet material upon which the type-Wheel is mounted and having anelastic extension, a spacing-Wheel mounted in said extension, a spring-paw] to engage the spacing-Wheel as it rotates,a base-plate formed to engage the carriage and a rack secured upon said base-plate for cooperation With the spacing-Wheel, substantially as described.
