SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 78:,637, dated May 2, 1905. Application filed October 2, 1903. Renewed .ualGli 10, 1905. Serial No: 24L9AOZ.
To (ti/i! whom/ 7275 ntrty concern.-
Be it known that 1, H ENRY LoUIs Des ANGns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Long Island City, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates, first, to a boiler in which water-tubes are provided around which tubes the gases of combustion circulate and through which tubes internal or fire tubes are passed, so that the heating-surface of the boiler is very greatly increased; and the invention relates, second, to a novel manner of fitting the several tubes which holds them securely in place and at the same time allows any one of the tubes to be removed conveniently for repair or for other purposes.
This specification is a specific description of one form of my in vention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a conventional type of boiler, in connection with which 1 have illustrated my invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the manner of fitting the tubes.
In Fig. 1,0 indicates the fire-box, the boilerdrum, and 0 (Z the front and rear water-legs, respectively. Said legs have, respectively, inner and outer tube-sheets c c and d (Z 0 indicates the water-tubes, which are extended between the tube-sheets c and d and aresuitably joined thereto, as indicated at c in Fig. 2. This may be effected by expanding, threading, or calking the parts, as desired.
Extended through the Water-tubes c are the internal fire-tubes f, which are of sufiiciently small diameter relative to the tubes 0 to allow for the proper volume of water within the water-tubes. The fire-tubesf project into the front and rear water-legs, but terminate inward of the outer tube-sheets, as shown, and are joined to the tube-sheets c and d by means of annular thimbles comprising relatively heavy main portions 9, in which the ends of the fire-tubes are fitted, and cylindrical or outwardly-extending portions 9' of external diamcter equal to or greater than the external diameters of the water-tubes, and said cylin drical portions r are suitably fastened in the outer tube-sheets c and (Z either by expanding, calking, or threading the parts, as may be desired. Now it will be seen by this arrangement that the gases of combustion circulating as shown in Fig. 1 will pass first around the watertubes c and thence through the fire-tubes f, thus greatly increasing the heating-surface of the boiler, and conseq uently the steam-producing capacity thereof. It will also be observed, because of the novel means of mounting the fire and water tubes, that either of said tubes may be removed at will when repairs are necessary. If one of the fire-tubes is to be removed, it is only necessary to cut away the injured tube and the thimbles thereof, leaving the adjacent watertube in position. and if one of the water-tubes is to be repaired the corres 'ionding fire-tube, with its thimbles, should first be removed, and then the water-tube may be withdrawn through the enlarged openings in the outer tube-sheets, in which openings the thimbles are fitted, said openings being of sufiicient area to permit the easy removal of the watertubes and the thimble portions g, and they are provided to securely lit the fire-tubes and at the same time permit the insertion or removal of the water-tubes. I
It will thus be apparent that by means of my invention not only am I enabled to greatly increase the heating-surfaces of the boiler, but I am enabled to mount the internal firetubes so that they and the corresponding water-tubes may be conveniently removed and refitted.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence 1 consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a boiler, the combination ofa water-leg having inner and outer tube-sheets, a watertube fitted and secured within the inner tubesheet and communicating With the interior of the Water-leg, a fire-tube extending through the boiler-tube and terminating at a point between the tube-sheets, and an annular fitting comprising a relatively heavy main portion encircling the fire-tube and having said tube fastened Within its inner circumference and an outwardly-extending portion engaging and fastened Within the outer tube-sheet.
2. In a boiler, the combination of a Water-leg having inward and outward tube-sheets, a water-tube fitted in the inner tube-sheet and com munieating With the interior of the Water-
