COMBINED WATER-HEATER AND GARBAGE-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,771, dated April 18, 1905.

Be it known that I, FERDINAND C. Kmvn' MEROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in a Combined Water- Heater and Garbage-Burner; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a combined water-heater and garbageburner, the object being to provide an eflicient water-heater in which the pipes are so arranged as to provide a suitable support for the garbage to be burned in the path of the hot gases, so as to consume such garbage with the greatest possible rapidity; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a furnace containing a water-heater and support for garbage constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to said drawings, A indicates a furnace having a grate B, an ash-pit C below the same, a fuel-feed door D, and a garbage-feed door E.
Mounted in the bottom of the ash-pit C adjacent the rear wall of the furnace ,is a manifold F, connected at one end adjacent its bottom with the water-supply pipe G. Entering said manifold F through threaded openings in the upper wall thereof are two rows of parallel vertical pipes H, staggered relatively to each other and terminating above the grate B, being connected at their upper ends by means of elbows J with similar rows of horizontal pipes K, which at their other ends enter a manifold L through threaded openings in one of the side walls thereof, said manifold L being supported upon a projection N on the front wall of said furnace and connected at one end adjacent its upper wall with the hot-water service-pipeO or by means of the latter with a suitable reservoir, if desired. The said rows of pipes K are also relatively staggered, so as to form a grate upon which the garbage introduced through the door E rests.
The manifold F is located below the grate B for the purpose of preventing direct irn pingement of the flames against the manifold, for the reason that as cold water is led directly into this manifold through the inletpipe G it would be dangerous to place this manifold in such position as that it would be very highly heated, as it'would be liable to explode if for any reason the inlet-pipe was closed and after the manifold became heated to a high degree the inlet was opened.
The hot gases pass out through the chimneyflue P and intheir passage attack the garbage and consume the same, there being sufficient oxygen remaining in such hot gases to per mit combustion. able to admit fresh air to promote combustion of the garbage, thedoor D may be partially opened or the dampers usually provided in said doors may be opened.
In order to increase the heating-surface and aflord better circulation for the water, I provide pipes Q, which are connected at one end with the end pipes H of the rows entering the manifold F and at their other ends with the end pipes K of rows entering the manifold L.
If it should be found desir The said pipes Q and the pipes with which they connect are disposed adjacent the side walls of the furnace where the heat is less intense, so that the greater heatingsurface provided by said pipes Q, will compensate for the less intense heat to supply relatively the same amount of hot water as the remaining pipes.
My device is very simple and efficient.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a furnace and a grate, of a water-receptacle below the grate and adjacent the rear wall of the furnace, a second water-receptacle above the grate and adjacent the front wall of the furnace, a row of L-shaped pipes connected to both receptacles, a second row of similarly-shaped pipes arranged adjacent to and parallel with said first-named row and connected to both receptacles, the vertical and horizontal branches of said second row of pipes carrying branch pipes of said pipes being disposed adjacent said rear wall, and horizontally-disposed branch pipes connecting the horizontal portions of one of said L-shaped pipes at each side of the row with the vertical portions of the same, said branch pipes being located below the horizontal portions of said L-shaped pipes.
