SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-BUBNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N '0. 787,687, ated April 18, 1905. Application filed January 12, 1905. Serial No. 240,748.

Be it known that I, BEN AMI NnMo, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of 'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety attachment for gas-burners, so that in case of accidental extinguishment of the flame or temporary interruption of the supply of gas the action of the burner is automatically interrupted, and thereby danger arising from escaping gas obviated; and for this purpose the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved safety attachment for gas-burners. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections, respectively, on line 3 3, Fig. 2, and 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section through the hollow diaphragm in the base of the burnertube, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, a designates a burner-tube of the usual construction, and a the tip of the same. The burner is provided with an enlarged base 6, the tubular shank of which is inserted into the lower end of the burner-tube a and which is made of two parts that are united by an overlapping joint at their circumference. The lower part of the said enlarged base 6 is fitted onto an auxiliary burner-tube (Z, which is screwed or otherwise attached to the end of the usual gas arm or bracket. The auxiliary burner-tube d is provided with an opening at its upper end which is closed by a ball-valve e, which is held on the valve-seat by a helical spring 6, that is interposed between the ball-valve e and a transverse pin 6 that passes through the auxiliary burner-tube and is riveted or otherwise attached thereto. Above the valve 6, in the auxiliary burner-tube d, is arranged a hollow diaphragm f of disk or other shape, which is attached at its upper part to a tube g, that extends through the burner-tube a, the lower part of said diaphragm being in close proximity to the upper part of the valve 0 when in closed position, forming merely contact with the same, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The interior tube g connects the hollow diaphragm'f with a vertically-disposed ringshaped tube it, which is located sidewise of the tip a in a plane parallel to the outletopening thereof and supported on a shank h,
arranged at approximately right angles to the burner-tube, by which the connection with. the upper bent end of the tube g is made. The ring-shaped tube It, its shank h, and the upper end of the connecting-tube g are filled with an expansible liquid, preferably mercury, while the lower end of the tube g and the hollow diaphragm fare filled, preferably, with water or oil, said liquid supporting the mercury in the upper part of the tube 9 and ring-shaped tube It. The interiorconnectingtube g is supported in the burner-tube by a perforated keeper, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the burner is to be lighted, the gascock is turned on, care being taken that the match used forlighting the burner is so held as to heat the ring-shaped tube b so that the mercury in the same is expanded and produces by the pressure of the liquid in the interior tube and hollow diaphragm f the expansion of the lower part of the diaphragm, and thereby theslight opening of the ballvalve,'so that gas is instantly supplied to the burner-tip, which is then lighted by the match. The heat of the gas on the mercury-containing tube it produces by the expansion of the diaphragm f the complete opening of the ballvalve against the tension of its spring, the
valve being held open by the expansion of the mercury in the ring-shaped tube and the liquid in the hollow diaphragm as long as the flame is burning. When the gas-cock is" closed, the expansible liquid in the ring-shaped tube It contracts, owing to the cooling of the same by the interruption of heat from the flame, so that the diaphragm is contracted. and returned to its normal position above the valve, which latter is returned by the tension of its spring into contact with its seat and shuts off thereby the supply of gas to the burner-tube independently of the gas-cock.
When the flame is extinguished either by blowing it out inadvertently or when the gascock is accidentally opened again after it has been closed or for any other reason, the ballvalve is almost instantly closed by the cooling of the liquid in the ring-shaped tube and the consequent contraction of the liquid and of the hollow diaphragm, so that the pressure on the ball-valve is removed and the latter returned to its seat by the action of its spring. In this manner by the automatic action of the attachment the gas-supply is automatically interrupted and the escape of gas from the burner prevented and accidents obviated.
The improved attachment for gas-burners is especially adapted for the sleeping-rooms of hotels, lodging houses, servants, and other rooms, where accidents are apt to arise from the careless handling of the gas attachments.
The safety device functions in a reliable and effective manner, is always in condition for use, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a burner-tube, of a liquid-containing tube adjacent the burnertip thereof, a liquid-containing hollow dia phragm within said burner-tube and in communication with said liquid-containing tube,
- and a normally closed valve below said diaphragm and adapted to be engaged and opened by the bottom thereof upon the heating of said liquid-containing tube.
2. The combination, with a burner-tube and a burner-tip mounted thereon, of a ringshaped tube disposed in a plane parallel to the outlet-opening in said tip, said ring-shaped tube being connected to the burner-tube by a shank disposed at approximately right angles thereto, a downwardly-extending interior tube connected to said shank, a hollow diaphragm in communication with said downwardly-extending tube, a normally closed valve arranged beneath said diaphragm and adapted to be engaged and opened thereby upon the expansion thereof. and an expansible liquid contained in said ring-shaped and downwardly-extending tubes and in said dia phragm.
