Description

@Quinn gieten getrat @Hire MANLEY PACKARD, or Non'ru4 EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
- Letters Patent No. 78,758, dated June 9, 1868;
.. turnover) SOLE-EDGE PLANE.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM' THESEPRESENTS MAY COME.:
Be it known that I, MANLEY PACKARD, of North Easton, in the county oflristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SoleEdge Planes; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in'the following specication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations.
Figure 3, an edge view of an edge-plane as constructed with my improvement.
Figure 4 is a side view of the cutter and gauge-stock.
Figure 5 is a side view of the knife as it appears when separated from the stock.
Figure 6 isa similar view ofl the`throat-piece.
In such drawings, 'A denotes the stock as'fa'stened to a handle, B. The stock should be made )f metal,
and be provided with a tangto enter the handle,'orboth handle and stockmay be formed in one piece of metal.
The stock has a groove, a, to receivethe shankfb'of the knife C. It also has an abutment-or projection, c, which' is extendedY from it, and against the back of the shank, in o'rder to support the knifel'at its heel against the strain brought upon the knife while it maybe in use. Y i
The knife, framed somewhat like a hook, and having ,its curved portion, d, grooved on its outer edge, (the cross-section of the groove being to conformV to that requiredf to be produced on a. sole,` edge to be trimmed by the implement,) has lits shank placed in its receiving-socket, and held therein by a set-screw, @which passes` through a. slot in the shank, and screwsinto the stock, the same'being so as to enable the knife to be`moved in the direction ,of its shank, so as'y to be adjusted with referencefftfo its throat-piece, D.
The said throa-tpiecepformed as represented in thedra'wings, has its shank,f, pivoted to the stock, that is, so as to turn on a centre-pin or screw, g, inA a direction away from the cutting-edge of the knife. There is a. notch, it, in the shank to receive a clamp-screw, z', which ifs screwed into the shank, the whole being formed and arranged as represented. Y A v v By loosening the screw the throatfpiece D may be turned away from the knife, and into the position as shown by dotted lines at D in fig. 1, suchbeing for the purpose of enabling ready access to be had to the cutting-'edge of the knife when it-may be necessary to sharpen it.
The throat-piece, on being turned back to place, brings up against the shank of its-clamp-screw, and thus Y attains its normal position. Thev projection of the knife beyond the throat-piece, so as to venable the former while in use to cut` from a` sole a shaving of any desirable thickness, is to` be determined by its means of adjustment. l i j I do not claim a knife formed in one pie'ce with the stock, and combined with an adjustable throat-piece, so xed to the stock as simply to be adjustable in one straight line only with .respect to the knife.
I claim as my invention or improvement in the sole'edge plane, 'the knife C, the throat-piece D, andstock as constructed in separate pieces, and arranged togetherand combined by meanssubstantiallyas described, so
as to enable the knife to be adjusted with `respect to the throat-piece, and such throat-piece be movedrelatively to the knife, all as and for the purpose or purposes as explained.
YI also claim the arrangement and combination of the abutment orsupporting-projection c, therstock A, the adjustable knife C, and the throat-piece D, movable relatively to the knife, as and for the purpose hereiubefore described.
