COMBINED BUCKLE AND HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,570, dated April 18, 1905.

.To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bazette, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Buckle and Hook; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in combined back-band buckle and trace-hooks; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

rIhe object of my invention is to provide a simple, comparatively inexpensive, durable, and eflicient device of this character by means of which a trace may be properly supported and held without chafing or bruising the side of the draft-animal.

The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accom pan ying drawings, in which- Figure lis a front elevation of my improved combined back-band buckle and trace-hook, showing the application of the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken upon the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3- is a perspective view of the buckle and hook with the' backband and trace removed.

denotes a trace of any form, 2 a back-band,

and 3 my combined buckle and hook, which comprises a base-plate 4 of rectangular form, provided along its side edges with right-angularflanges 5. Adjacent to the upper end of the central portion of the base-plate4 are formed two transversely-extending parallel slots 6 and 7, the-latter of which has formed along its upper wall or edge a series of downwardly and outwardly projecting teeth or spurs 8. In the side flanges 5 of the buckle adjacent to their centers are formed two alining recesses 9, which are preferably shaped as shown and extended approximately one-half the depth of said flanges. Pivotally mounted in alining openings 10, formed in the side flanges 5 adjacent to their upper ends, is a swinging hook ll, which is preferably formed of vwire bent as shown.- The said hook has its lower end turned inwardly, as shown at 12, passed upwardly, as at 13, and then outwardly, as at 14, in order to prevent the trace from becoming disengaged from it.

In use the back band 2 is passed downwardly through the upper slot 6, over teeth 8, then through slot 7, then down the rear or inner face of said base-plate 4, then up over the j front face of the same between the side anges 5, and then through the slot 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be seen that when the back-band is th us engaged with the buckle the teeth 8 will securely hold the former upon the latter, and since the under side or face of the base-plate4 is covered by a portion of said back-band the side of' the draft-animal will be protected from the metal portion of the device. The trace 1 is engaged with the portion l2 of the hook 11, as shown, and is seated in the recesses 9, formed in the centers of the sides 5 of the buckle-plate. Owing to the central disposition of said recesses 9 with respect to the plate, the pressure or strain exerted by the trace upon the buckle will be distributed equally over the entire surface of the plate 4, and owing to the fact that the recesses 9 are not as deep as the depth or width of the flanges 5 the trace 1 will beheld away from the side of the animal to prevent it from rubbing or otherwise injuring the animal. It will be further noted that the device is of exceedingly simple and durable construction and that it may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is

'end adapted to engage a trace to hold the same in said recesses and above said base-plate, substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a base-plate having side anges formed with lalining recesses, a hook pivotall5T mounted between said Hanges and having an inturned end to engage a trace to hold the same in 'said recesses, and means upon the said base-plate for attaching a back-band thereto, substantially as described.
