WHEEL-FENDER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 787,051, dated April 11, 1905. Application filed December 17, 1904. Serial lie. 237,261
The invention includes a novel arrangement a of fenders and also novel means for latching the same so that they will drop into position to catch a body or object on the track.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the front fender and one side fender in raised position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one side fender in dropped position. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective, illustrating .the latch arrangement,
for controlling the drop of the fenders. Fig. 4: is a detail in perspective, illustrating the operation of thelatches by means of a connection with the reversing-lever of the controller of the electric motor.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 in: dic-ates a front horizontal fender, at the rear 'of which is an upright fender or guard 2, pivoted to the front fender at 4.
8 indicates two steel supporting-bars, which run lengthwise under the front fender and under the platform of the car, being attached at the rear end to a rod 8, supported on the hangers 43, one at each side of the car-platform.
At the front of the fender 1 is a rod 5, covered with rubber, and this rod is connected to two sliding rods 7 which are movable lengthwise and operate to trip the supporting devices for the fenders, so that they will drop. To this end said rods 7 are provided with stops 9, arranged to strike the lower ends of angular hangers 11, which are connected at 10 to a cross-bar 15, which is supported by a rod 16, extending vertically through the carplatform. The rod turns in the conneceach side. to a loop 38 onthe bars 8, and they swing up tion 16 at the lowei? end of the rod. The hangers 11 normally support the fender 1. When a body is struck by the bar 5, the rods 7 slide back, causing the stops 9 to strike and swing backthe hangers, allowing the fenders 1 and 2 to drop-to the ground.

The side fenders 3 are normally supported by the latch-bolts 35. When the rods 7 are shoved back, the cross-bar 33 hits the depending bar 30 and pushes it against the bar 32, which is thus forced backwardly and retracts the bolts 35, allowing the side fenders to fall to strike and rest upon feet 36, projecting at person or object on the track drops all three fenders.
Means are also provided and will now be described for dropping the fenders by the motorman. The rod 16, which supports the hangers of the front fender, hasa loop 16 at the top, which is hooked upon a latch 42, pivoted at the top of a standard 17 supported on the car-platform adjacent the controller,which is indicated at 23, and this latch is normally held by a pin 18, which is connected byxa chain 20 to the reversing-lever 21 of the controller. When the motorman desires to stop the car and drop the front fender in an emergency, the swing of the reversing-lever will pull out'the pin 18, allowing the latch 42 to These side tip and drop the rod 16, and consequently the front fender and also the side fenders through the connecting-wire 27*.
The side fenders may be operated by the mo torman by means of a treadle 24, connected to a bell-crank lever 26, which in turn is connected by a wire 27, passing over a pulley 29, to a swinging arm 30. Pressure on the treadle causes the arm 30 to swing back, forcing the bar 32 backwardly, and with it the bolts 35, thereby releasing the two side levers.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a front and two side fenders arranged to lift and drop, of an impact-bar before the front fender, and means actuated by said bar to drop all of the fenders.
2. The combination of a front and two side fenders arranged to lift and drop, and means on the car, adapted to be actuated by the motorman, to drop said fenders.
3. The combination with a car having a controller thereon, of a fender arranged to lift and drop, and means connected to the reversing-lever of the controller to drop the fender when said lever is turned.
4. The combination with a lift-and-drop fender, of a supporting hanger therefor, and means constructed to be actuated both by impact with an object on the track, and by a person on the car, to release the hangers and drop the fenders.
5. The combination with the hinged side fenders, sliding bolts supported on the car and arranged to hold up the fenders, an impactbar at the front of the car, a man-operated device on the car-platform, and connections between said bolts and the impact-bar and device, constructed to draw the bolts and drop the fenders by operation of either the said impact-bar or the device.
