Be it known that we, GEORGE R. 1V. LAN- `NING and FRANK M. TUsIA, citizens of the United States, and residents ot' Egan, in the county of Moody and State ot' South Dakota, `have invented anew and Improved Belt-Tight- `ener, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to belt-tighteners, our

[o more particular object being to produce a neat, simple, eliicient, and reliable tightener and which admits of a certain amount of adjustrnent.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying i5 drawings, Jforming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the tightener in use. Fig. 2 is an elevation :o of the tightener as viewed from the left of Fig. 1 and somewhat enlarged'. As shown in Fig. 1, the belt 6 is provided one end with a buckle 7, having a tongue 8, adapted to enter any one of a series of holes ;O 9, 9, 10, and 11 in the other end, 6, of the belt, which end terminates in a tongue portion 12. The handle ot' the tightener is shown at 13, and rigidly secured upon this handle is a shank lll, provided with a threaded lug 15,

;5 preferably integral therewith. A rod 16 is .provided with a threaded cylindrical portion 17, engaging the threaded lug 15, and is free to turn relatively thereto, so as to adjust the lposition of the rod 16 relatively to the shank O 114:. The lower end of the rod 16 is provided with a shoe 18, preferably integral therewith. The lower end of the shank 14 terminates in a hook 19, provided with an upturned point 20.

W hen the tightener is to be used, the

L5 tongue portion 12 of the belt 6 is drawn through the buckle 7 and the point 20 of the shank 14 is passed upwardly through one ot' the holes 9, 9, 10, or 11, as indicated in Fig. 1. The

handle 13 is now grasped rigidly by the hand i0 and pulled away from the buckle 7, the shoe 18 engaging the surface of the portion 62L or' the belt. The tongue portion 12 is thus gradually drawn through the buckle 7 until the metallic tongue 8 ot' the buckle can engage in succession the unoccupied holes 9, 9, 10, or 11, so as to give the belt the requisite degree of tightness.

ln cases where the belt is short, so that difiiculty is experienced in drawing the ends thereof together, an auxiliary strap 21 may be used, virtuallylengthening the belt. This strap is provided with holes 22 and 23 and with a hook 94, this hook being brought into engagement with one or' the holes 9, 9", 10, or 11 of the portion 6 of the belt 6. rl`he auxiliary strap 21 is passed partially through the buckle 7, and one ot' its holes 22 or 23 is engaged by the hook 20. The handle 13 is now manipulated, as before described, so that he hook 2O ot' the shank 14C pulls directly upon the auxiliary strap, and thus brings the ends of the belt together, so that the belt may he fastened by means of the buckle in the same manner as above described with reference to Fig. 1.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A belt-tightener comprising a shank provid ed with a lug integral therewith, said shank being further provided with a handle and with a hoek for engaging holes in the belt, and a rod passing through said lug and adjustable relatively thereto.

9.. A belt-tightener comprising a shank portion provided with a lug and with a hook, a handle mounted upon said shank portion, and a rod connected with said lug and movable relatively thereto for purposes o1 adjustment.

3. A belt-tightener comprising a. shank pon tion provided with a lug and with a hook, a handle mounted upon said shank portion, and a rod connected with said lug and provided with a shoe for resting upon the surface ot' the belt.
