Attorney UNITED STATES Patented March 28, 1905.
PATENT OEEicE.
CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '786,17 6, dated March 28, 1905.
Application filed September 28,1903. Renewed October 28,1904. Serial No. 230,425.
To @ZZ 1177x0711, 7115 Hefty concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cabinets for holding handbooks, envelops, papers, tickets, &c., but more particularly adapted for holding duplicating account-books and pass-books used in grocerystores and the like. y
The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction of cabinets or racks of this character, and thereby render them more durable and convenient in use and less expensive to manufacture.
lV ith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will bemore fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the division units or sections.
Referring' to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes an outer case, cabinet, or holder in the form of the rectangular box or casing having an inclined bottom 2 and an open top, the upper edges 3 of the sides of the casing being inclined with reference to the perpendicular forwardl i and downward from its back simil lar to the bottom 2 of the casing. The casing may be constructed of any suitable material and of any desired size and is adapted to receive a number of removable inner division or compartment units 4, which are arranged in both longitudinal and transverse rows and which iit snugly within said casing. Said units or sections 4 may be made of sheet metal, stiff cardboard, or of any suitable material, and each consists of a single piece of material,
preferably sheet-tin, bent over upon itself at its lower end and at each side to form a pocket or compartment in which the sales or account books are retained. Said pockets are preferably rectangular in cross section and are formed by bending the metal iirst in a forwardly direction at right angles to the body portion 5, thus producing the bottom 6, and sides 7 of the pocket, and then. bending it again at right angles to provide the inwardlyprojecting flanges 8, which form the front of the pocket, the back of the same being formed by the body portion 5.
The units 4 are all of the same size and are placed in the box or casing 1 in parallel tiers, as shown, the front flanges 8 of one unit engaging the back 5 of the contiguous unit. Owing to the incline of the bottom 2 of the box, each unit will project slightly above the adjoining unit at its front, thus facilitating the insertion and removal of the books or other articles in the pockets or compartments formed by the units.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings, the construction, use, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It will be seen that the division-units are extremely simple and may be turned out very rapidly and at a very small cost in a tin-stamping press. It will be further noted that by using these units either in a vertical or a horizontal position a rectangular box havingalevel bottom and an open top or an open side, which may be closed by a door, if so desired, or a holder of any description may be quickly subdivided into pockets orcompartments, the units forming perfect partitions.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriiieing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An outer case open on its upper side and having an inclined bottom, and a plurality of inner unit-cases in said outer case, projecting' above the open upper side thereof, and sup- IOO ported on the inclined bottom thereof in asl directly in Contact with one another, substan- I0 Cending series to display their upper portions, Said unit-eases being independently removable from the outer ease through the open upper side thereof and each Comprising a wall or body portion having side and bottom portions projecting from one side thereofl and provided with iienges lying in a common plane parallel With said body portion, said unit-eases being tially as described.
In testimony whereof 1 have hereunto set my my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES P. ADAMS. Witnesses:
W. J. V. DEAooN, GERTRUDE ABBOTT.
