TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, G. WATSON GUERBANT, of Iieaksville, in the county of Rockingham, and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing a tool which can be used either as inside calipers, outside calipers, try-square, bevel-gauge, compasses, or rule, and combiningrin one simpleinstrument the properties of the six above named. I

My improved machinis'ts tool is composed of two bars of brass-or other suitable metal, ,A B, united near their centres by the pivot l). The bars are each out half way through, so that their top and bottom edges will always heflush. A slotted arm, G, is pivotedto one end of the bar A, and a set-screw, b, on the adjacent end of the bar B moves in the slot u of the arm 0. A curved slot, a, with radius struckfrom the centre of the pivot ii, receives the set-screw b when the tool is used as a bevel-gauge.

It will be seen that the edges x x of the dcpressionsmade in the bars A B are square with the sides of the bars, so as to holdthem at right angles when used as a try-square. I

e 0 represent the compass-points,ff the inside caliper-points, and g g the outside caliper-points. H is the rule.- The divisionsmarked upon the slotted arm O render the outside calipers self-registering.

To us'e the tool as a try squar'e, the bake A B are moved upon the pivot until their sides strike the edges :2: x, which causes the angles at a and b to be right angles. When used as a bevel-gauge, the bars andB are closed, and the slotted arm ,0, working upon the pivot d, can be set at any desired inclination, and retained byth'e set-screw b. v

The manner of using the compasses, inside'and outsidecnlipers, and rule is self-evident upon inspection, being the same as in ordinary use, but it will be remarked that the outside calipers are made self-registering by the gauge marked'upon the slotted arm 0. I 7

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the bars A audit, and slotted mm C, arranged and operating as'described, for the purposes set forth.
