Be it known that 1, ROBERT M. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved construction of that type of fence-posts which are commonly made of clay, terra-cotta, cast metal, or similar substance, and aims to promote the general serviceability of the article, as well as to provide special means for securing the line-wires to the post.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a fencepost embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section view of the post, showing more clearly the means for attaching the linewires. Fig. 3 is one side elevation of the post, amodified form of wire-attaching means being illustrated. Fig. A is a detail perspective view of the modified form of wedge. 6

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In general structure the post 1 is of hollow or tubular form and is made of clay or any suitable substance or composition usually employed in the manufacture of supports of the class to which the invention relates. In order to heighten the ornamental effect of the post, the same is provided at the upper end thereof with a cap 2, surmounted by a ball or head 3. In addition to the above the basal portion of the post is flared for the purpose above premised.

The post is provided throughout its length with a plurality of lateral openings 5, and

these openings receive horizontal hook-bars 6. extending entirely through the post I when in operative position. The bars 6 are provided at one end with a hook or engaging member 7 and at the opposite end with a head 8 tranverse of the body of the bar. The hook 7 0f the bar 6 is designed to engage the linewire 10 to secure the same to the post, and a wedge 9 cooperates with the head 8 to hold the bar 6 from displacement and to positively effect the desired cooperation of the parts 7 and 10 mentioned. The wedge 9 is formed with spaced members 11, which receive the head 8 therebetween, and sliding or vertical movement of the said wedge affords the wedging action thereof in a manner clearly apparent. The wedge 9 may be of solid form, and the inner side of the same which rests against the post 1 is preferably concaved, so as to conform to the contour of this member.

In Figs. 3 and 4 the form of the wedge 9 is somewhat modified, the body being cut away laterally between the front and the rear sides thereof, as shown at 12. By cutting away the wedge as indicated the outer portion of the same (designated 9) has a spring movement toward the inner portion 9 which construction is advantageous in preventing accidental displacement of the member 9. Further, the outer face of part 9 of the wedge 9 is provided with a series of transverse grooves 13. Since the head 8 of the bar 6 consists of laterally-extending elements, said elements will enter the grooves 13 of the wedge 9 as same is driven into wedged position and an advantageous positive interlocking of these parts thus secured.

The whole structure of the post and adjacent parts is very simple, and therefore comparatively inexpensive, and the invention is for this reason especially desirable to those having need of a device of this class.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- In combination, a fence-post provided with lateral openings therethrough, bars passed through said openings, each of said bars being provided with a hook at one end and a head at the other, the hook being adapted to receive a line-wire, and a wedge provided with spaced members receiving the head of ceive the head and effect positive interlocking the bar aforesaid therebetween, said wedge having the outer and inner portions thereof spaced from each other, the outer portion having spring movement toward the inner portion When the wedge is driven into position, said outer portion being provided upon its outer face with transverse grooves to reoi' the wedge with said head. 10
