APPARATUS FOR DISPENSING BEER OR OTHER LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,994, dated March 14, 1905.

Be it known that I, VICTOR ERNEST JULEs DURAFORT, engineer. a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, Department of Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Dispensing Beer or other Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple device intended more especially for use by retailers and private consumers of beer and other liquids in dispensing directly from a barrel or the like beer or other liquids under pressure.
It is well known that beer keeps in a much better condition if it be kept in a barrelor like container and subjected to the pressure of carbonic-acid gas introduced into the barrel or the like each time liquor is drawn as therefrom. Without this introduction of gas every barrel or the like from which liquor is drawn off loses under the action of the air its Small retailers and private consumers have hitherto had to content themselves with bottled liquor, which is more costly without possessing the same taste as liquor drawn from barrels or the like.
The present invention consists of an apparatus by means of which liquefied carbonicacid gas can be used in small liquor establishments and for drawing off the liquor under the same conditions as those which exist in large establishments.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the apparatus applied to a small cask; Fig. 2, the container of liquefied carbonic-acid gas.
The apparatus consists of a conical hollow plug or spigot a, to the side of which is attached avessel b, the top part of which is provided with a screw-cap 0, containing an automatic pressure-reducing piston (Z. The container e of the liquefied carbonic-acid gas is placed in this vessel 6. The conical hollow plug or spigot a is provided internally with a central tube m, carrying at its upper end a discharge-tap j, which may be kept in its closed position by means of a stirrup and padlock g.'

A pressure-gage j may, if desired, be used in conjunction with the apparatus, and said gage is shown as connected with the vessel 6 by a tube 5.
To place the apparatus in position, the screw-clamp and thumb-nut h 70, respectively, between the central tube and the container of liquefied gas are manipulated to release the central tube an and the latter drawn out until its lower end is level with the lower end of the spigot 60. The container of liquefied gas 0, with its opener a, is placed in the aforesaid vessel therefor, and the cap 0 is screwed on the top of the said vessel, care being taken that the aforesaid pressure-reducing piston (Z, which bears on a diaphragm of rubber o, is in proper position over the gas-container opener, so that the valve of the gas-container can be opened by pressing on the piston d. The cap 0 of the vessel is screwed in tightly, and the spigot is driven into the bung-hole of the barrel or through one of the ends, according to whether the barrel is placed on its side or on its end. To facilitate driving and fixing the spigot into thebung-hole, there is provided on the plug a bossq for receiving the blows from a mallet. The central tube m is then pushed through the spigot and fixed in position by tightening the thumb-nut in, forming the gland of the stufiEing-box, as hereinbefore stated.
If theliquor be at first largely laden with gas, it is not at first necessary to create a pressure inside the barrel, and the liquor is drawn ofi until it is deemed advisable to supply gas to the barrel, which is easily shown by the condition of the froth. it is then only necessary to press on the button, which acting on the reducing-piston cl pushes the opener a, which opens the discharge-valve of the container of liquefied gas, so that the desired quantity of gas passes into the barrel. Every time beer is drawn 01f gas is injected, and so on, until the contents of the barrel are sufliciently drawn ofl.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this invention and in What manner the same may be performed, I declare that what I claim is- An apparatus for dispensing beer and other liquids comprising a spigot, a thumb-nut carried thereby and forming a stuffing-box, a tube passing through and held in proper position with relation to the spigot by the thumbnut, a liquefied-gas container communicating with the spigot at one side of the tube, a screwclip carried by said container and engaging the tube to hold the latter against yielding, a discharge-tap carried by the upper end of the tube, and a pressure-reducing piston carried by the said container.
