LOCK-WASHER FOR NUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 784,423, dated March '7, 1905.
Application filed December 17,1904. Serial No. 237,333.
T!) "/17, it I/ the ends of said plate. Said plate is also pro- Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. PARKER, a vided with means for securing it against roo citizen of the United States, residing at Maben, tation, preferably consisting in forming points in the county of Oktibbeha and State of Misadapted to enter the wood of the article to 5 sissippi, have invented certain new and useful which it is attached by turning down the cor- Improvementsin Lock-l Vashers for Nuts; and ners of said plate. The lip is adapted to be I do hereby declare the following to be afull, pressed outward by the corners of the nut as clear, and exact description of the invention, it is turned on, and when the plate is made of such as will enable others skilled in the art to spring metal said lip springs back at each step 10 which itappertains to make and use the same. and locks the nut against reverse turning.
My invention relates to improvements in The plate may be made of soft iron or other locks for nuts, adapted more particularly for metal, in which case the lip would have to be use on railroads, &c. It has for its object to manually pressed back into position to lock provide a single lock of the same type as the the nut after it has been screwed home.
I5 double washer for which I made application, Iteferring more particularly to the draw Serial No. 193,385, on February 13, 1904:, ings, 1 is the washer-plate, and 2 is the lip, which is simple and cheap of manufacture and formed by cutting a lateral slit 3 from its edge at the same time will not easily get out of orand a longitudinal slit 4. The bend of said der, but will securely and permanently hold lip is indicated at 5 and extends from the end 20 the nut against displacement. of the longitudinal slit to the point 6 onits The invention consists in the details of conlateral edge. The corners of the plate are struction and combinations of parts hereinturned down, as at 7, and are adapted to be after described, and more particularly pointed pressed into the surface of the'article to which out in the claims concluding this specification. said plate is applied to secure the plate against 25 In the accompanying drawings, illustrating rotation.

4 In carrying out my invention I provide a washer-plate having a lip formed by cutting curved or bowed plate, preferably of spring a slit from its lateral edge inward and thence metal, having a perforation for the passage of a longitudinal slit, said lip turned up laterally 0 a bolt, and a lip formed by cutting a slit from substantially perpendicular with the plate, its lateral edge inward and thence a longituthe end of said lip adapted to engage the side 45 dinal slit, said lip turned up laterally subof a nut at right angles thereto and lock said stantially per 'iendicular with the plate, the nut against reverse turning. bend extending from the extremity of the 2. In a device of the character described, a longitudinal slit to a point on the edge within washer-plate having a lip formed by cutting a slit from its lateral edge inward and thence a longitudinal slit, said lip turned up laterally substantially perpendicular with the plate, the end of said lip adapted to engage the side 5- of a nut at right angles thereto and lock said nut against reverse turning, and means for holding the plate against rotation.
3. In a device of the character described, a curved Washer-plate having a lip formed by T cutting a slit from its lateral edge inward and thence a longitudinal slit, said lip turned up laterally substantially perpendicular with the plate, the end of said lip adapted to engage the side of a nut at right angles thereto and lock said nut against reverse turning.
4. In a device of the character described, a washerplate of spring metal having a lip formed by cutting a slit from itsJateral edge inward and thence a longitudinal slit, said lip turned up laterally substantially perpendicu- 3 plate, the bend extending from the extremity of the longitudinal slit to a point on the edge within the ends of said plate, said lip adapted to engage the side of a nut and lock said nut against reverse turning.
6. In a device of the character described, a washer-plate having a lip formed by cutting a slit from its lateral edge inward and thence a longitudinal slit, said lip turned upward laterally substantially perpendicular with the plate, the bend extending from the extremity of the longitudinal slit to a point on the edge within the ends of said plate, said lip adapted to engage the side of a nut and lock said nut against reverse turning, and means for holding the plate against rotation.
7. In a device of the character described, a washer-plate of spring metal having a lip formed by cutting a slit from its lateral edge and thence a longitudinal slit, said lip turned upward laterally substantially perpendicular with the plate, the, bend extending from the extremity of the longitudinal slit to a point on the edge within the ends of said plate, said lip adapted to act as aratchet against the corners of the nut permitting it to be turned on and locked against reverse turning, and means for holding the plate against rotation.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
I/VILLIAM H. PARKER.
