PATENTED MAR. 7, 1905.
N. M. MGDANIEL. MAGHINB FOR PUNGHING OUT RIVETS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 25 1904.
STarns Patented March '7', 1905.
NELSON M. MGDANIEL, OF MGFALL, MlSSOUl-tl.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784:,117, dated March '7, 1905.
Application filed November 25. 1904. Serial No. 234,316.
To all whom it puny concern.-
Be it known that l, NELSON M. MoDANInL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Fall, in the county of Gentry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Punching Out Rivets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for punching out rivets; and it consists in a simple and eiiicient mechanism whereby rivets ot' different sizes may be readily punched out from apertures in plates of various kinds.
The invention consists in various details of construction and combinations and arrange ments of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically delined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view oi my improved punching apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the apparatus vertically.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a frame, which may be made of malleable cast-iron or other metal, and B designates a lever which may be positioned either in the manner shown in the drawings or extend in the opposite dircction, as may be desired. Said lever carries a pin U, the ends of which extend laterally from the lever and have a vertical play in the slots 1), which are formed in the plates D, which project from the standards forming a part of the frame of the apparatus. Mounted upon the projecting ends of said pin is the bifurcated end of a steel punch E, which has a vertical play in a suitable guide member com.- prising an extension A of the frame, aperturcd, as at a, to receive the punch, in which the latter has a vertical play. The inner end of the lever is provided with a series of gearteeth. G, which are in mesh with the rackteeth K, formed on the edge of the upright portion of the frame, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the drawings. Said frame carries a rotatable disk N, which is provided with apertures N oi ditlerent sizes, which are adapted to be brought into registration with an aperture 0, formed in the frame of the machine underneath said disk. Said disk is mounted centrally upon a bolt Q, the shank portion of which extends through the bottom of the frame and has a nut Q titted to its end, and a coil-spring J interposed between said nut and the bottom of the frame, serves to normally hold the disk against the flat table portion oi the frame. A lug '1. projects through the bottom of the frame and extend ing slightly above the upper surface oi the level on which the disk rests is designed to engage in a hole L, termed in the under surface of said disk. Said lug is provided for the purpose of holding the disk with one or the other of the apertures therein in registrae tion with the hole formed in the frame in alinement with the punch.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of my improved apparatus for punching out rivets the machine may be easily adjusted for operating upon rivets o1 different sizes by bringing one or the other of the apertures of the disk underneath the punch. By the downward throw oi the lever it will be observed that great power will be applied to the punch for the purpose of forcing the rivet from its ei'igagcment with an aperture in a plate or other object.
\Vhile .l have shown a nirtici'ilar construction of rivet-punching apparatus illustrating my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the details oi the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my il'lvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An zu'iparatus for punching out rivets consisting of a frame, a rotatable disk mounted thereon and provided with apertures, a longitudipally-movable punch, a lever with projections thereon upon which said punch is pivotally mounted, guidmvays upon the frame in which said projections have a play, rack-teeth upon the upright portion of the frame, and cog-teeth upon the lever for engagement with the rack-teeth, as set forth.
2. A machine for punching out rivets comprising a frame, an upright portion having rack-teeth thereon, a rotatable spring-actuated disk mounted upon said frame and having apertures therein of different diameters designed to be brought into registration with an aperture in said frame underneath the punch, a lever having pins projecting therefrom, guideways in which said pins have vertical play, teeth upon the lever for engagement with the teeth of the rack-bars, and a punch pivotally mounted upon said pins, as set forth.
3. A machine for punching out rivets comprising a frame, an upright portion having rack-teeth thereon, a rotatable spring-actuated disk mounted upon said frame and having apertures therein of different diameters designed to be brought into registration with an aperture in said frame underneath the punch, a lever having pins projecting therefrom, guideways in which said pins have vertical play, teeth upon the lever for engagement With the teeth of the rack-bars, and a guideway in which said punch has a longitudinal movement, as set forth.
t. An apparatus for punching out rivets consisting of a frame With an upright portion having rack-teeth thereon, a horizontally-disposed apertured disk, a bolt passing through said disk and frame of the machine, a spring mounted upon said bolt and designed to hold the disk in contact with the frame, a lug projecting from the frame and designed to engage a hole in the under surface of the disk, a lever having teeth upon the inner end thereof designed for engagement with said rack-teeth, a pin carried by said lever and guided in slots in the upright portion of the frame, a punch pivotally mounted upon said pin, an extension of the frame having an aperture therein through which said punch is guided, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON M. MoDANIEL.
