Description

2,3." WAKEMAN, or Rooiiroun, ILL'INois.
Letters Patent No. YAO, dated .May 26, 1868.
IMPROVED RAILRGADRAIL @the Stlgehtle rnfetrnh tu in time tcttett gnent mit mating put nf tige eine.
TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, Z. B. WAKEMAN, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulV Improvements in Railroad-Rails and do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, an'd exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a side view7 showing the mode of connection.
Figure 2- reprcsents a bottom view, vand Figure 3 represents a `cross-section. v
In the annexed drawings, A represents the shell Vor outer portion of my ruil. This rail is mademof the usual form, and of any meta-l preferred. The shell-rail A is hollow from the cap to the base, and forms both the capV and the base, beingcut out at it's bottom at suitable intervals, (as shown in Hg. 2,) so as to dispense with other than the required material. At each side of each end of the shell, about half way from its top to bottom, is made a square-shaped opening, as seen in tig. 1, and near the hhse at cach side is cut a notch, ns seen in tig. 3. B represents a. metal block, made to fit neatly within the hollow rail A, which is provided with projections on each side, that it into thel notches in the lower portion ofthe shell A, and has an opening made crosswise of its centre, for connecting it to the rail A. The block Bis iittedin between the two ends of two ,opposite rail-,sections A,'and a key or wedge, C, is passed through the spaces inthe rails A, and the opening in the middle of the block B'Vthereby securing the three together, and causing the blockv B to liit closely-under the top portion' of the rail A, by means of the wedge-shaped key, forming a continuous rail, and giving solidity to the rail. V
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.'lhe combination of the hollow shell-rail A, with its interior notches, and the block B, when connected thereto by the wedge-shaped key C, all constructed as specified.
In testimony that .I claim the-foregoing, I have hereunto 'set my hand, this 24th day` of January, ISGS.
Z. B. WAKEMAN.
