SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,683, dated February 28, 1.905.
Application filed December 15, 1903. Serial No. 185,268.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CnARLns H. CowAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread (Jruides, ol which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in thread-guides; and it consists in a threzul-guide 1 which is reversible. so that when the threadreceiving groove in one side is worn down to a point where the free running of the thread is prevented the thread-guide may be reversed, and thus present a new thread receiving :5 gi-o ve in position for use.
My invention further consists in a l'GVOI'Sl.
ble thread-guide having thread-receiving grooves in two of its opposite sides, the said thread-guide being also formed on these sides to engage either the spring guide-wire or the reciprocating guide-bar.
llractical embodiments of my invention are represented in the accompanyingdrawings, in which .Figure i represents in front elevation a portion of the reciprocating guide'baroi a winding or reeling machine, together with two of my reversible thread-guides and the spring guide-wire for holding them in engagement with the bar. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the guide-bar, showing one of the thread-guides in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the guide-bar and thread-guide in the plane of the line A A. 01 Fi 1. Fig. i represents in front view another form of reciprocating guide-bar and threadguides. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the guide-bar, showing the thread-guide in end elevation; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section throughthe guide-bar and thread-guide in the plane of the line B B of Fig. l.
in the construction shown in Figs. 1, E2, and 3 the longitudinally-reciprocating guide-bar is denoted by 1 and the usual spring guide wire for holding the thread-guides in position thereon by 2. The thread-guide, which may he made of porcelain, glass, or other suitable material, isdcnotcd by and it is provided in two of its opposite sides with transverse thread-receivilig grooves L and 5. This threadguide is further provided in two oi its opposite sides with longitudinal grooves i and 7, each of which is titted to receive either the spring guide-wire or the reciprocating guidebar, according to the position oi the threadguide. vln the present instance .I haveshown the inner longitudinal groove 7 as receiving the tapered top 2% oi the guide-bar and the longitudinal groove 6 as receiving one arm of the spring guide-wire 2.
ln the form shown in Figs. 4;, 5, and U the long-itudinally-reciprocating guide-bruis donoted by 9, which guide-bar is provided with a longitudinal groove 10 in its top. The threadguide in this Form is provided with the transverse threinhrcceiving grooves l and 5, as in the form hereinbel'ore set forth. 'lhis th readguide is :lurther provided with lrmgitudimil ribs '11 and l2, each of which is iittcd to enter the longitudinal groove it) in the guide-bar 9, according to the position oi the thread-guide. 'lhese lugs .11 and 12 are provided with longitudinal grooves 13 l t, each of which is titted to receive one arm of the spring guide-wire 2, according to the position 01" the threadguide;
- \V hen one of the transverse grooves in the thread-guide has been worn down to a point i where it prevel'lts the free runnii'ig oi the thread therethrough, the thread-guide may he ii'nmediately reversed to present a new transverse threiul-receiving groove in position for use, thus materially lengtheningthe life of the tlu'eiul-guide.
it is evident thatthe threzul-guide may he made in various forms without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence 1 do not wish to limit myself strictly to the forms herein set forth; but
What i claim is 1. A reversible threiul-gnide having transverse thread receiving grooves in two of its opposite sides and having the said sides also formed to engage either the guidebar or guide-Wire.
I In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my invention 1 havesigned my name, in pres- IO ence of tWo Witnesses, thls lkth day of November, 1903.
CHARLES H. OOWAN. Witnesses:
EDWARD E. BRADLEY, B. S. CUTLER.
