,UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAF ROOT, OF TILLY FOSTER, NEW YORK.
SHARPENER FOR CUTTERS OF BRE AD-SLICING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,464, dated February 28,1905.
Application filed August 30, 1904. Serial No. 222,725.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that l, GUSTAF ROOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tilly Foster,
in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sharpeners for Rotary Cutters of'Bread-Slicing Machines, of which the following is a specification;
This invention provides novel means for sharpening rotary cutters having a waved cutting edge; and it is designed most especially for use in connection with the bread-slicing machine disclosed in Patent No. 756,413, granted to me April 5, 1904.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a whetting attachment which may be readily applied to the operating-lever of said machine for sharpening the cutter without necessitating the romoval of the cutter from its lever, said attachment readily conforming to the sinuosities of the waved cutting edge, so as to operate on all parts alike.
WVhile the invention is designed most especially for a particular machine, it is to be understood that it is susceptible of a wide range of application in connection with analogous machines, thereby providing a sharpening device readily applicable to machines embodying rotary cutters.
The invention consists, essentially, of a plate having longitudinal slots and provided at one end witha holder inclined to the plane of movement of the plate and adapted to receive the whetting or sharpening device, said slots having a portion enlarged and headed studs provided upon the support of the rotary cutter for retaining said plate in position and directing it in its movements resulting from adaptation of the sharpener to the waved edge of- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sharpener embodying the invention. Fig.2 is a perspective view showing the sharpener applied. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line w w of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the attachment and parts illustrated in Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The operating-lever 1 and the rotary cutter 2 are substantially the same as shown in my patent herein mentioned. Headed studs 3 are provided at the upper edge of the lever 1 and preferably consist of machine-screws fitted into threaded openings on said lever, whereby provision is had for adjustment and removal of said studs.
The sharpening attachment consists of a plate 4, having one end upturned, as shown at 5, to provide a finger-piece and provided at its opposite end with a longitudinally-inclined holder 6, to which is fitted a whetting or abradingdevice 7. Longitudinal slots 8 are formed in the plate 1 and are enlarged at one end, as shown at 9, to admit of the heads of the studs 3 passing freely therethrough, said heads overlapping the portions of the plate bordering upon the slots 8, so as to hold said plate in place upon the lever 1. The whetting or abrading device 7 may be of stone, metal, corundum, or the like commonly employed for sharpening tools and implements. The part 7 is detachably fitted to the holder 6, which latter is integral with the plate 4, to admit of its ready replacement or adjustment, as may be required.
When it is required to sharpen the rotary cutter 2, the plate 4 is fitted to the lever l by passing the heads of the studs 3 through the openings 9 and pressing the plate forward to cause the heads of the studs to overlap the parts of the plate bordering upon the sides of the slots 8. The longitudinal inclination of the holder 6 causes the abrading or whetting device to extend obliquely across the edge of the cutter, and by pressing the plate forward and rotating the cutter the latter is sharpened in the manner Well understood. The cutter illustrated is provided with a waved or scalloped edge, and in order that the whetting device may act uniformly on every portion of the edge it is essential that the plate 4. be free to move backward and forward upon the lever. Hence there should be no binding action between the headed studs and the plate. The thumb exerts a pressure upon the outer end of the plate 4, so as to hold the part 7 in contact with the edge during the sharpening operation.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a support, headed studs projected from said support, a plate provided with longitudinal slots having enlarged portions to receive the heads of said studs, and an abrading device upon said plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a support, headed studs projected from the support, a plate having longitudinal slots enlarged at one end to receive the heads of said studs, an integral finger-piece at the outer end of said plate, and a longitudinally-inclined abrading device at the opposite end of the plate, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination, a support, headed studs provided upon the support, a plate having an integral finger-piece at one end and a longitudinally-inclined holder integral with the opposite end, the plate being provided with longitudinal slots intermediate of its ends provided with enlarged portions to receive the heads of said studs, and an abrading device fitted to said holder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
