FREDERICK WILLIAM MARGETTS, OF EAST DULVVICH, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM LANE MITCHELL AND CHARLES OLLIFFE, OF EAST DULWICH GROVE, SURREY COUNTY, ENGLAND.
. KNIFE-CLEANING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,446, dated February 28, 1905. Application filed iIanllaly 7, 1904. Serial. N0. 188,059.
To all whom, it 777/(1/y concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM MARGn'rTs, sanitary engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing atll Bawdale road, East Dulwich, in-the county of Surrey,
England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Scouring or Polishing Knives, of which the following is a specification.
IO My invention relates to knife-cleaning apparatus which is so constructed that a number of knives can be completely and thoroughly cleaned at one operation and without requiring to be shifted longitudinally in the apparatus. Furthermore, by my invention the knives are reciprocated in a straight line over fixed pads, thereby avoiding the production on the blade of the curved marks usually produced when the knives are cleaned by rotat- 2o ing disk pads.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a knife-cleaning apparatus constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation showinga modification of the knifeholder and the lever mechanism for reciprocating it. Fig. 5 is a plan of part of Fig. I, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of. another modifica- 3 tion of the knife-holder.
The same letters of reference are used to denote the same or corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is an outer case or box having fitted in the lower part thereof a pull-out drawer B,
which forms a receptacle for the polishingpowder used during the cleaning. When convenient, the drawer B can be removed and the contents emptied into the polishing-powder 4 box C, which latter is provided with atroughshaped mouth C, discharging into the interior of the apparatus between and above the polishing-pads. The polishing-pads are secured to suitable frames or backings D, mounted on spiral or other springs D in the outer case or box A. The pads are arranged face to face in the ordinary way and are constructed alike. Each pad is made up of a series of parallel strips of leather or other suitable material D arranged at an angle to the vertical, as shown 5 in Fig. 1, and the two pads, forming a pair, are arranged with the strips inclined in opposite directions. The strips D are left free at both ends and are secured in grooves or recesses D*, formed in the pad frame or backing D. If desired, the strips D" may be secured at the upper ends in longitudinal pieces of the same material of a hardened character, fastened in any suitable manner to the pad frame or backing D. .At convenient places between the strips D bunches of bristles (Z or other suitable material are fixed to form ledges onto which the polishing-powder will fall and where it will be held during the cleaning. 5
The knife-holder is in the form of a movable frame mounted on horizontal guide-rods E, on or fixed to the upper part of the outer case or box A. The knife-holder frame is made to clamp the knife-handles, being made with 7 one fixed and one movable part.
In the knife-holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2 one series of clampingblocks,f, is secured to the fixed bar F of the knife-holder, the other series of clamping-blocks, f, being secured to the movable bar F, which latter is secured to a bracket F having a threaded aperture therethrough in which engages the screw-bolt G, mounted in the bearing G and operated by a suitable handle G 30 In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the clamping-blocks are kept in the closed posi tion by means of the spring H, which bears on the bracket .F and bearing G. The blocks are opened by means of a cam-lever J on the rod K, which latter is secured to the bracket F said cam-lever taking against the outside of bearing G.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 a knife-holder adapted to receive one knife 9 only is shown. In this form the movable bar F, carrying the movable clamping-blockf, is mounted on the top of two fixed barsF instead of to one side. Otherwise this modification is constructed and operated in the same way as that shown in Fig. 6.
It Will be observed that in all the forms of the knife-holder the clamps are arranged so as to hold the knife-handle fore and aft relatively to the direction of travel of the holder, so that there is no risk of the knife being left behind when the knife-holder is reciprocated.
The knife-holder frame is reciprocated on the horizontal guide-rods E by lever mechanism connected to a fixed center of motion N on the side of the outer case orbox A. In Fig. 1 the reciprocation is effected by the connecting-rod L and crank M, operated by the crank-handle m. In Fig. 4 a slotted lever P is employed, having an operating-handle 1), this being sufficient where the travel is short; but any other suitable arrangement of levers may be used for effecting the desired reciprocating straightline movement of the knife-holder.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A knife scouring or polishing machine comprising an outer frame or box, two vertical resiliently-mounted polishing pads arranged face to face, a frame therefor, guiderods mounted on the outer frame, a knifeclamping frame mounted for reciprocation upon the said guide-rods, and means for reciprocating the knife-clamping frame comprising lever mechanism attached to the clampingframe and turning on a fixed center on the said outer frame or box.
2. A knife scouring or polishing machine comprising an outer frame or box, two polishing-pads arranged vertically and face to face, each pad being composed of leather strips arranged parallel and at an angle to the vertical and a backing to which the strips are secured, springs bearing upon the backings of the pads so as to make the latter yielding, guide-rods mounted on the outer frame, a knife-clamping frame mounted for reciprocation on the guiderods, and means for reciprocating the knifeclamping frame.
3. A knife scouring or polishing machine comprising an outer frame or box, two vertical resiliently mounted polishing pads arranged face to face, a frame therefor, guiderods mounted on the outer frame, a knifeclamping frame mounted for reciprocation upon the said guide-rods, said clamping-frame comprising a fixed and a movable part,a series of clamping-blocks secured to the fixed part, a second series of clam ping-blocks secured to the movable part, a bracket to which the movable part is secured, a screw-bolt working in said bracket, said screw-bolt having an operatinghandle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 22d day of December, 1903.
FREDERICK WILLIAM MARGET'IS.
