Letters Patent No. 78,332, dated May 26, 1868.
IMPROVED STONE-BREAKER.
tI-lgt fitlgthnle infant tn in than Enters fitted mm making put at 11p tam,
Be itknown that I, HIRAM H. ScovILLE, of the city of Chicago, and State of Illinois, have invented a. new and useful Machine for Breaking Stone.
The invention consists in constructing a machine, with a fixed column in thecentre of the machine, (it being of the same piece, and part of the bed,) together with a hopper oscillating on trunnions, upon each side of the column. 'I' also face the opposite sides of the column with concave plates, corrugated transversely, and the opposite ends of the hopper with convex plate corrugated in the same manner. Said plates are attached to the column and hopper by caps, or in any other manner convenient-for removal.
The shape of the corrugated surfaces on the column and hopper may he changed from the above description, so as to make the column convex, and the hopper concave, or the corrugations may bemade vertical instead of horizontal; but I. prefer the mode of construction first above described, as the best- To enable others to construct and operate a machine like mine, I will describe the same in detail, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the machine, reference being had to the annegred drawings, making a' part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view of the top of the machine.
Figure2 is a longitudinal elevation. I
The several parts are described as follows, towit: The .part represented by the letter A is the bed of the machine. 13 is one of the trunnions upon the column 0, upon which the hopper D'oscillates. E E are convex plates, transversely corrugated, attached to each endot' the hopper D. '13 F are concave plates, transversely corrugated, attached to opposite sides of the column G. V
G is a driving-pulley. H is a shaft, on which is an eccentric or cranlr. K is a connecting-rod, connecting, by the pin L, the shaft H to the hopper D. M M are caps holding in place the plates E E and F F.
Having described the several parts that are essential to the practical operation of the machine, I will now describe the operation of brcakingstone. Power being applied to the pulley G, the shaft H is made to revolve, and through the medium of the eccentric and connecting-rod, a rocking or oscillating motion is given to the hopper D. 'Power being applied to the hopper at L, from a'point approximating a vertical line with the pin L,- each revolution of the shaft H causes the ends of the hopper D to approach and recede from the column 0, causing in effect a double-acting breaker.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The fixed central'column C, with its corrugated faces, in combination with the corrugated faces on the oscillating hopper D, the arm K, the shaft H, with its eccentric or crank, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described.
HIRAM H. SGOIIILLE.
