CUTTING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, OLUFTYBERG, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Mechanisms, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings,forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cutting mechanism.
In cutting mechanisms for cutting sheet materialsuch, for instance, as leaves of tobaccoit is usual to provide a cutting-bed on which the leaf is held by suction, said bed supportinga cutting-die which comprises two sections. A cutting-roller is provided which cooperates with said die and reciprocates there over. To keep the edge of the die in good cutting order, it is necessary to frequently sharpen it; but it has been found that it is practically impossible to grind the two sides or sections of the die in such a way as to keep their cutting edges in the same horizontal plane. If, however, one side of the die is lower than the other, the roller does not produce a clean cut, as it rec'iprocates over the die if it coacts with both sides or sections at the same time. For this reason, therefore, it has been customary to arrange the cutting-roller so that it cooperates with one section of the die during one stroke of the reciprocation and with the other section of the die during the other stroke of thereciprocation, the roller being given arocking movement in the direction of its axis between the strokes. In the construction referred to the roller has heretofore been in the form of a cylinder. T/Vhen, therefore, it is rocked in the direction of the axis, as before described, it happens that dur ing the cutting operation it stands at an angle,
v'ention consists in certain constructions and in certain parts, improvements, and combinations, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a cutting mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and L are diagrammatic views illustrating the position of the cooperating cutting-roller on each stroke of the reciprocating movement.
The cutting mechanism which forms the subject of the present invention is intended to be used in connection with an organized machine for making cigars or cheroots such, for instance, as that described in United States Letters Patent to Oluf Tyberg, No. 65 L203, dated July 24, 1900and is intended to be operated by one of the moving parts of said machine. Inasmuch, however, as it is capable of use in other machines and for cutting material other than tobacco-leaves, and inasmuch as the cutting mechanism proper has no special relation to the rest of said machine, it has been deemed unnecessary to illustrate any of the parts of said machine or the particular moving parts from which the cutting mechanism is operated, it being understood that the parts of the cutting mechanism may be driven from any suitable source of power.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a cutting-bed which serves to support a cuttingknife, said knife comprising two cutting- sections 2 and 3. The cutting-bed will preferably be a suction-bed and is therefore illustrated as provided with the usual perforations 4, through which the suction operates to hold the material to be cut on the bed, the suction required being obtained from any suitable source and operating through the pipes 5, 6, and 7. The construction by which the suction is obtained and the constructionof the cutting-bed itself may be similar to that disclosed in the patent above referred to, and reference is accordingly made to said patent for a full disclosure of said constructions. The cooperating cutting device, which coacts with the knife and forces the material to be cut thereagainst, may be of any suitable construction. It comprises, however, two parts, which are so arranged with relation to each other and the knife that during the cutting operation that one of the parts which is cooperating with one of the sections of the cutting edge will stand at a right angle thereto. In the specific form of the construction illustrated the cutting device consists of a cutting roller 8, said roller consisting of the frusta of two cones placed base to base, and therefore being double-cone-shaped one of the coneshaped parts, a, being arranged to cooperate with one of the sections of the knife, and the other cone-shaped part, 7), being arranged to cooperate with the other section of the knife. The roller is carried in an arm 9, said arm being mounted on a carriage 10, which reciprocates on ways 11, the reciprocation of the carriage being produced in any suitable manner, as by a lever 12, which is connected by a link 3 to a stud 14 on the carriage, the lever 12 being actuated by any suitable source of power. The arm 9 is or may be provided with a projection 15, which bears againsta spring-operated plug 16, the spring which operates the plug being maintained in a suitable cup 17, mounted on the carriage. It may be here remarked that the construction of the carriage and the parts for operating'it is or may be substantially similar to that shown in the patent above referred to. The roller is arranged, as has been before stated, so that one of its cones cooperates with and its surface is at right angles to one of the cutting-sections of the knife during one stroke of the reciprocation of the carriage and the other cone cooperates with the other section of the knife and its surface is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation of the carriage. While the positioning of the roller may be effected in various ways, the construction preferably employed will be that shown in the patent above referred to. Inasmuch as the construction is fully set forth in the patent, it is deemed unnecessary to describe it here further than to say that the arm 9 is carried on a lever 18, which is suitably journaled in the carriage 10, said lever having its lower end in engagement with a shifting cam-plate 19, which contacts with suitable stops 20 and 21 at the end of each stroke of the reciprocation. The position of the roller during each stroke of thereciprocation is well shown in Figs. 3 and 1. In Fig. 3 the cone 7) of the roller is cooperating with the section 3 of the cutting edge of the knife, and it will be seen that the surface of the cone 7) is substantially at right angles to this section. In Fig. 4, the cone 0 is shown as cooperating with the section 2 of the cutting edge of the knife, the roller having in the meantime completed one stroke of the reciprocation and having had its position shifted by the mechanism before described. As illustrated in Fig. 4, it will be seen that the surface of the cone a is substantially at right angles to the edge of the cutting-section 2.
\Vhile the construction which has been described illustrates a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is notto be limited thereto, as it may be embodied in other forms of construction.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a cutting device having two parts, means for producing a reciprocating movement between the cutting device and the die, and means for varying the relative position of the die and the device so that one part of the device cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during'one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
2. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a cutting device having two angularly-disposed parts, means for producing a reciprocating movement between the cutting device and the die, and means for varying the relative position of the die and the device so that one part of the device cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
3. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a cutting device having two angularly-disposed parts, means for reciprocating the cutting device over the die, and means for varying the relative position of the die and the device so that one part of the device cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
4. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a cutting device having two angularly-disposed parts, means for prod ucing a reciprocating movement between the cutting device and the die, and means for changing theposition of the device with respect to the die, so that one part of the device cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
5. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a double-cone-shaped cutting-roller, means for producing a reciprocating movement between the roller and the die,- and means for varying the relative position between the roller and the die, so that one part of said roller cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die-and its surface is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
6. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a double-cone-shaped cutting-roller, means for reciprocating the roller over the die, and means for varying the relative position between the roller and the die, so that one part of said roller cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
7. In acuttingmechanism, the combination with a die having a cuttingedgeincludingtwo cutting-sections, of a double-cone-shaped cutting-roller, means for producing a reciprocating movement between the roller and the die, and means for giving the roller a rocking movement in the direction of its axis so that one of its parts cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during the other-stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
8. In a cutting mechanism, the combination with a die having a cutting edge including two cutting-sections, of a double-cone-shaped cutting-roller, means for reciprocating the roller over thedie, and means for giving the roller a rocking movement in the direction of its axis so that one part of said roller cooperates with one section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during one stroke of the reciprocation and the other part of the roller cooperates with the other section of the cutting edge of the die and its surface is at right angles thereto during the other stroke of the reciprocation, substantially as described.
